Passionate greenskeeper wants everyone to be happy at ERPM

Nyide’s duties include checking greens, checking machines, monitoring water, checking sprinklers, course inspection and staff allocation, just to list a few.

One of Ekurhuleni’s most decorated greenskeepers and ERPM Golf Club’s sons, Ernest Nyide, spoke to the Advertiser about his time at the club since arriving in 2000.

Nyide’s attitude towards his job is simple: “Every morning I arrive to do my job to make members happy. When members are happy with my job, I’m happy with the members as well,” said the 42-year-old.

It’s this sort of attitude which saw him named Ekurhuleni Golf Union’s Best Greenskeeper in 2016.

Nyide, a resident of Reiger Park, has again been nominated for the same accolade following his role in helping the ERPM Golf Club’s greens recover from chemical mishaps earlier this year.

Nyide began his stay at ERPM as a general worker until 2006 before being handed the opportunity to start operating on the greens machines, an ascension owed to his high work rate and passion.

In 2012, he was promoted to greenskeeper, a post that requires him to satisfy thousands of golfers who demand nothing short of perfect playing conditions on a daily basis.

ERPM Golf Club chairperson Nick Alberts also paid tribute to Nyide.

“Greenskeeper is the top echelon of work at the golf course. Ernest jumped all the stages to become an operator of greens machinery. It’s a job that comes with a lot of responsibility and pressure but he’s been fully capable.”

He says his toughest of times arrived in recent years when Gauteng experienced drought and the more recent greens mishap – an ironic turn of events which has now earned him the running to possibly double his Best Greenskeeper in Ekurhuleni status.
