Letter to the editor: Honoring public servants

Tribune-Review

This week marks Public Service Recognition Week. Here in the Pittsburgh area and across the state and country, this week is an opportunity to acknowledge and thank the people who serve our government in various ways: our tireless public servants.

While Public Service Recognition Week occurs annually during the first full week of May, the celebration this year feels even more meaningful. Over the past 14 months, public workers have continued to serve their communities. Our refuse workers, firefighters, bus drivers, public safety officials, laborers and public administrators have continued to show up every day and do the work required of them to help the city run.

In my office, our public servants have been ensuring city bills are paid, inspections occur, and accounting and auditing work continues. This means our public retirees receive pension checks, roads get paved and annual reports are submitted without delay.

The covid-19 pandemic has made us all aware of the folks we rely on so much: front-line medical workers, essential grocery and food chain employees, and these tireless public servants who have been working to ensure there is no disruption in services.
