Scotland’s first Muslim cabinet minister has revealed that the events of 9/11 drove him towards politics.

Humza Yousaf was 16 and at school in Glasgow when the Twin Towers in New York were brought down by Islamist terrorists on September 11, 2001.

In an interview with Holyrood magazine, the Scottish justice secretary revealed how that terrorist act and the reaction of his friends changed his life.

“9/11 was described as the day that changed the world and for me, in my small bubble, my world, it just completely changed,” he said.

He said that he used to sit beside the same two boys during registration and “talk about the same things all normal 16-year-old boys would talk about”.
