Publix Opens First Campus-Based Store, Targets Generation Z

TAMPA, FL - Publix Super Markets is tweaking its small-format store to become a queen of the Gen Z, a.k.a me! This week, the Florida-based retailer sent its urban prototype back to school, opening its first on-campus store location at the University of South Florida.

Brian West, Media and Community Relations Manager, Publix“This store will do a lot of business right here. That’s why this is so big. This is USF, so it’s going to be much more grab-and-go, so let’s give them more space to work with,” said Brian West, Media and Community Relations Manager, who noted that the store’s larger grab-and-go department was expanded in anticipation of the university consumer base, according to the Tampa Bay Business Journal.

The new on-campus store location is a first for Publix

The USF store is 28,000 square feet and offers college students a wide selection of salads, sandwiches, and specialty cheese. Because it is housed on USF’s campus, the store will also sell the university’s merch—go bulls!—and be a partner with USF’s on-campus food pantry for students, known as the Feed-A-Bull program

“The collaboration it took to make this happen is so important,” West added.

The on-campus store will feature more grab-and-go items and university merchandise
