SoCon announces men's soccer player of the week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer forward Trevor Martineau has been named the Southern Conference men’s soccer player of the week for all competition Oct. 8-14.

Mercer went 2-0 this past week, beating USC Upstate 3-2 and conference opponent Wofford 5-2. Against USC Upstate, Martineau assisted on the first of the three goals for Mercer, finding Leo Toldeo Jr. for his third assist of the season. He earned a career-high four points against Wofford on Saturday, scoring one goal and handing out a career-best two assists. The McKinney, Texas, native found Jake Mezei for the first goal of the match against Wofford before finding the back of the net himself in the 54th minute. He then fed the ball to Jason Udom for the final goal of the match. Martineau has registered at least one point in five consecutive matches and is tied atop the SoCon leaderboard in points this season with 17.

This is the third time this season that Martineau has been honored as the Southern Conference men’s soccer player of the week. The last time this honor was given out three times to the same player in a single season was in 2012 to Elon’s Chris Thomas. This is the first time the honor has been given three times in a single season to a freshman.

The Bears looks to extend their five-game win streak, as they travel to Nashville, Tennessee, to take on Belmont on Tuesday before heading back home to face UNCG on Saturday.

Also nominated: Danny Barlow (ETSU), Rocky Guerra (Furman) and Jacob Planell (UNCG).
