A spy, an assassin, and a telepath walk into a room...
Twilight is the best spy in Westalis, a master of disguise. He lives and works undercover in the neighboring country of Ostania. As he reads the information on his next assignment, he’s shocked to learn that he is required to have a wife and child (neither of which he currently has). The target in question, a very dangerous man who is a threat to the peace between east and west, is very reclusive and the only way to reach him is through the elite private school his son attends. As if this wasn’t bad enough, the deadline for admissions is fast approaching. Twilight only has a week to find a wife and child and enroll that child at Eden Academy!Twilight’s first stop is an orphanage to find a child—a rather shady orphanage at best. But perhaps that will suit his purposes better. He has no experience with children, but reasons that he must find the smartest one he can, so the child can pass the entrance exam to the academy. He finds a girl working a crossword, but she seems too young for the school. She is quick to assure him she is six years old. Little does he realize that Anya is a telepath! Twilight chooses her and is relieved to find no paperwork involved—he is told to take her and go.Now… to find a wife.At City Hall, in the capital city of Berlint, Yor is different from the other women she works with. Quiet, and somewhat naïve, she is the object of constant criticism in the guise of helpful hints, such as improving her appearance so she can find a man. Her brother Yuri worries about her, and calls her often. To relieve his mind, she tells him she has a boyfriend and is going to a party that weekend. What no one knows is that Yor is actually an assassin, and a darn good one! But how is she going to find a “boyfriend” to take to a party on such short notice?Three people are on a collision course with destiny! Each one has needs—Twilight a wife, Yor a boyfriend, and Anya a family. When chance—or is that Fate?—brings them together, they decide to form a family. Will they be able to fulfill Twilight’s mission and gain Anya admission into Eden Academy? And if they do, how long can they maintain their cover… and how long will they want to?This is the first volume of the series. I confess that it was love at first sight when I saw the cover! And reading the description only made me want it even more. I pre-ordered the first three volumes, the first of which just came out. I love the artwork, and I love the premise of the story, which did not fail to deliver when it arrived. It’s an action adventure story, but there is a lot of humor in these pages as well, and more. The characters are all well drawn, even if the plot is rather basic. It’s not a series about spies as much as it is about people. I see the two countries involved, Westalis and Ostania, as thinly veiled disguises for East and West Germany. (I mean, come on, Berlint?) But that doesn’t really matter. The spy action is secondary to the character development, watching these three interact, each using their unique talents for the benefit of the other two.Of course, being the romantic that I am, I’m hoping that by the end of the series, Twilight (whose real name I hope to learn) and Yor will fall in love for real and they both embrace Anya as their daughter, so that they become a real family. Only time will tell! Also take note of Twilight’s co-worker, Franky, who is a hoot and lots of fun.Great start to the series, looking forward to volume 2!

A perfect companion for the anime series, or a wonderful family-friendly story by itself. A true, rare, fun, heartwarming, and captivating family adventure! Please don’t ever change!

I purchased this as a gift for an adopted child who likes anime and manga. The anime is his favorite show, and he greatly enjoyed the first volume of the manga, especially the pages with the colored drawings. The story contains wonderful messages of found family and family by choice. I've seen a few episodes of the show and it is very sweet. While some of the situations the characters find themselves in may not be considered kid friendly, it is much less violent than other anime and manga out there. I plan to purchase the other volumes of this manga for him.

Who is the master of disguise? James Bond? No, Agent Twilight. Not Edward Cullen and the confusing love triangle no one understood. Agent Twilight is assigned with working undercover to get intel from the Desmond family. With no way to get to his subject, he’s assigned to do what any sensible spy must do. Become a father. Agent Twilight finds an “orphanage”, more like your aunts at home daycare, to adopt an unwanted child. There he finds wide eyed Anya with a few tricks of her own. Anya tricks Agent Twilight with, yep you guessed it, telepathy. Oh you weren’t going to guess that? Me neither. Twilight and Anya have their ups and downs, but quickly develop a relationship where blood is shed. Well not theirs. Agent Twilight must now gear Anya for his mission to get closer to the Desmond family. Anya is enrolled into a fancy pants school, you know the ones you see on tv where you have to know the difference between a salad fork and a soup spoon. They’re just eating devices guys, just eat the damn food! Nonetheless, a more important task becomes apparent for Anya and Agent Twilight. Another parent is required.

Twilight scrounges through available singles, finding a lovely, deadly single woman named Yor. Yor is also desperately looking for a “partner” to help get her co-workers to stop making fun of her. Though killing them is always an option, she asks Twilight, now known as Lloyd, out instead. Lloyd expresses admiration for Yor in front of her coworkers, they turn one day fiancé and quickly get “married”. As one big happy, weird family, they gear up for admission at the school. The school sets up traps for families to fail, way to go education. Despite the traps and random acts of ELEGANCE happening, the families entrance isn’t guaranteed.

Will Twilight and his family make it into the school? Will they exude enough elegance and grace? Find out in Vol 2.

Overall Spy x Family is a breath of fresh air. It doesn’t have the normal expectations of a spy book. There is nothing typical about this manga at all. It has comedy, action, and a hell of a lotta story. The manga makes me drawn into the characters and their story. Tatsuya Endo did amazing with this manga. I give this manga ten toxic skulls out of ten. If you haven’t already give this a read!

Spy X Family is a wholesome comedy about a group of strangers who come together as a family and grow to love each other. Its premise is simple but what makes it shine as a great read is its well-written characters and their dynamics. Each of the three main characters has a secret they have to hide from one another, making the antics and stakes greater. I don't want to go into too much detail as I feel this is a manga best enjoyed without spoilers, but I promise you will not be disappointed.

Spy X Family is a great light read for any audience really, and if you are a fan of the "Found Family" trope, you will enjoy it that much more. Even if you don't find the comedy funny, the interactions between the characters is enough to put it above many other series in my opinion.
