For as long as I live, my wife, Janet and I will never forget that day.
A
pivotal moment in our career as compounding pharmacists that forever changed everything.

Back in 2001, a morbidly obese patient came into our pharmacy. She was on around 20 different medications, ranging from high blood pressure to diabetes to high cholesterol. And they were costing her…
Nothing.

We were creating no value in her life.
She didn’t care who we were.
She didn’t care about the medications.
She didn’t care about how they worked, or anything related because it was costing her nothing…

WE were a part of the problem (regardless of economic policy or what’s learned in pharmacy school). Janet and I decided to change our commitment, and thus, our system.

Click BUY to learn what we did in 2002 as a business and economic solution that was in alignment with our 100% commitment to enable others to ACTUALLY better their health

… which leads to better families,
… which leads to better communities.

(and how if you’re a healthcare provider, aspiring pharmacology entrepreneur, interested in relevant pragmatic or deconstruction examples, or saving money for your own family… YOU can make a difference, too)...

Our eyes and hearts were forever opened. Our commitment shifted that day to be a part of a positive solution. Period.

In
Sickened: How the Government Ruined Healthcare and How to Fix It, learn Shawn’s 6-Step framework.

Practical. Proven. Common sense (with a twist). And jaw dropping patient and provider stories!

For current or future pharmacy professionals, pharmacology students interested in learning
how to make a REAL difference, interested in how to run a successful pharmacy business… medical professionals interested in examples and solutions for caregiving and medical ethics...

PLUS…

For those interested in not only a practical application of the philosophy of pragmatism and deconstruction, but ALSO economic policy in healthcare as it relates to the political science of our American government.

You’re not alone if you’re wondering if making changes in our current healthcare system is really a pipe dream or is doable for the average American today. This is the most exciting time in our country's history to be a problem solving, solution focused, health care entrepreneur today and in the coming 20+ years.

    From the Author

I've been in health care for over 25 years and have had many experiences with providers and patients regarding the break down of our health care system.  I have wanted to write a book for many years to try and explain that there must be a better way.  In 2015 I started jotting down notes and ideas.  I had so much information that took me back to the 1860's and how the government first got involved with things they shouldn't, ie the food supply with the Department of Agriculture, I had to narrow it down and focus more on health care.  I started writing and quoting statistics and just realized how difficult it is to write a book.  I needed help putting my ideas on paper and fact checking.  I finally reached out for professional help to put my mind on print.  This process took over 5 years of writing and over 25 years of experience in the field.  I have a big passion for this subject and want to change the system.  There are many patients and health care providers that have the same mindset.  Some just need a bit more education.  I hope this book accomplishes that and empowers people to control their own health.  It has been a challenging process.  I could not have done it without help from so many family and friends.  Follow your passion.  Put them on paper.  Hire help if you need it.  I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed the process.

A quick read, but full of great info on how to take control of your health care, starting with reducing your need for it with a healthy lifestyle.

Tips on how to find alternatives to employer-provided insurance as well as low-cost DPC memberships, a growing area of choice for health care.

Dedicated health professionals are trying to move health care back to a relationship between you and your doctor, not your insurance company dictating what care you receive and how much you pay.

Highly recommended, especially for people who don't have employer-paid health insurance.

Fellow pharmacist here. Shawn opens our eyes to the fact that: "he who pays the bills makes the rules". Do we, as pharmacists, want to be true partners in health with our patients or do we want to be data miners for gigantic corporations? Do we want to have impactful relationships with our patients or do we want to spend 50% of our time billing/explaining/fighting third party payors? We CAN change the system if we CHOOSE to throw off the shackles and open up self-pay pharmacies. Thank you, Shawn, for your insightful look into where we are, how we got there, and what we can be. Control. Choice. FREEDOM!

Shawn has written an informative and insightful book on what is wrong with our healthcare system. I recommend it to all who desire to make changes in how they view healthcare and health insurance. We should be in control of our choices in healthcare and yet so many are bound by the "system". My husband and I have been involved in a health share community since 2014 and have found it to be so beneficial. However the medical community still needs to change when dealing with "cash" patients. I agree with Shawn and how interesting you are treated when the Doctor or hospital finds out you are paying cash. We need more medical communities that are cash friendly. Thank you Shawn for all your hard work and research to share this book with us! I believe it will challenge some to think and hopefully respond a different way about healthcare.

A great read about the history of how we got to the mess where are in today in healthcare - and how you can fix it! Very well written, easy to understand and quick to read. Self-care is the key. Two of my favorite quotes:

    From the author:
“The best health insurance we have is not something we can buy. It is how we take care of ourselves.” ~ Shawn Needham

Ask yourself this: Would you go to a dentist with yellow crooked teeth if you were paying out of pocket to have some work done?

(Exactly why I quit an HMO dentist and paid cash for a pediatric dentist for my daughter when she was young)

Highly recommend this quick read to get your health on track! Thanks Shawn for putting this out there, excellent book.

This book beautifully articulates how the American Healthcare system grew into the mess it is and how that model needs to be dumped for one where we make our own choices and pay the (realistic) bills—not the ridiculously inflated bills that go to insurance companies.

If you’ve ever considered a HealthShare, this will help you understand those too.

Let me first say that I know the author and have been very impressed with his desire to help change the course of medicine in this country. Also I will point out that like Shawn and his wife I have made the switch from “regular” medicine to the alternative medical world. With regards to the book, it is an easy read (this is a good thing), well written with some very good ideas about how to improve medicine. Excellent book, well worth the read! I wholeheartedly agree with his approach (I have taken a similar approach myself) and believe he is spot on in his observations and recommendations.

This was an inspiring read. As a pharmacy employee I see the injustice of government and employer based health insurance. For example if we are contracted with Medicare we must accept and bill for prescriptions that are covered under the plan. However, the catch is that some drugs will be reimbursed below our cost. At the end of the day we get a long list of drugs that were reimbursed under cost. One day we lost over $2000. So what end up happening is the pharmacy owner starts to tell us he will not stock the product anymore and to send the patient to another pharmacy instead. If it’s cash pay he would order the product.
