Welcome to our October SES newsletter. We were very pleased to hold Harnessing FAIR Data earlier this month with Queen Mary University of London and UCL. We had a range of speakers and guests join us, including keynote speaker Prof. Pam Thomas (PVC for Research at the University of Warwick) who discussed the final report for the Open Data Task Force, Panel Chair Robert Kiley from the Wellcome Trust and David Hartland, co-author of the recent Jisc Fair in Practice report. If you couldn't make it,  the full talks and presentations are now downloadable via the SES website.

If you'd like to follow-up Harnessing FAIR Data with some questions on how to share your own research data, the UCL Research Data Support team is running a lunchtime session as part of Open Access Week on the principles of FAIR and practicalities of sharing.  The session is open to all researchers with priority given to UCL staff and students.

In research news, we're showcasing two exciting projects this month:
  • SENSE focuses on the vital issue of signal interference, with a clear goal: to help create a global 5G ecosystem that delivers on its potential and generates a world of opportunities for businesses, consumers, healthcare and other sectors.  It's a cutting-edge collaboration involving researchers as King's College London and Queen Mary University of London, working with the University of Bristol and some of the biggest names in technology, including Intel, Vodafone and Toshiba.
  • TRANSIT is being led by a team at Queen Mary University of London alongside industry partners, including Rolls Royce and Air France KLM. They're tackling some of the biggest issues in aviation, aiming for fewer delays, fewer emissions, lower fuel costs and less noise from aircraft. Remarkably, it’s by targeting times when aircraft are still on the ground that the global aviation industry could make big strides in achieving all of these benefits.
This month we're also joined by Maxine Mackintosh from the UCL Institute of Health Informatics and One HealthTech.  She discusses how early intervention is key to preventing cognitive decline, employing primary care data (ie from GPs), linked to secondary care data (i.e. hospital data), linked to death certificate information for over 10 million patients. She is currently completing exploratory analyses into the medications, symptoms, diseases, signs and procedures that happen in the lead up to dementia.

For more from our recent events take a look below as Sergio Silverio reviews our Gender Summit event with a discourse on the changing role of gender in research.
