Square, the payments company that makes it easy for small businesses to accept credit card payments wherever you go, is finally catching up with the times today by updating its tiny card reader.
Starting today, customers can now get a Square Card reader that connects via Lightning port instead of the traditional 3.5mm audio jack that Apple is trying to hard to kill.
Apple debuted the Lightning port way back in 2012. Instead of supporting it natively, Square forced merchants to use a dongle to accept payments. That method worked just fine, but it meant having to keep track of the adapter too if you have an iPhone 7, iPhone 8 or iPhone X.
Now when you go to the company’s website to request a free Square Reader you can choose between the headphone jack and Lightning versions. Better yet, Square has also made the reader work with Macs now too.
You can start using your old Square Reader on your Mac today. Just plug your old reader into your Mac’s audio jack, open Virtual Terminal and then follow the prompts to set it up. It also works with Chromebooks running a Google Chrome browser.
Square’s readers work with the free Square Point of Sale app that allows anyone to take payments from their iPhone or iPad. Of course, there’s a 2.75% fee for each swipe, but at least you don’t have to buy an entire point of purchase system.
