COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Albert Christopher Settlemeyer, 39, of Clarkton, was killed when a gas tanker he was driving burst into flames in Nakina Wednesday night.

Highway Patrol officials said he ran off the road and hit a pole.

David Ransom, Deputy Director of the Columbus County Emergency Management Services said the tanker was filled with fuel and appears to have exploded after it crashed.

The wreck happened on Hwy 905, near John Gore Road.

According to a News Reporter story, the tanker knocked down power lines and woods near the wreck caught fire.

Officials say alcohol was not a contributing factor.

The highway patrol is investigating.
