It's great to see Oculus VR has published #VR #Accessibility Design guidelines. They're off to a good start. Still, the Captions and Subtitles section needs changes. This isn't nitpicking. Some guidelines will hurt #UX. 🔣 Font It says there's no universal font for captions. True. But it should point out to use a plain sans serif one. You want to avoid fancy sans serif fonts. ⬇ Location Need to talk to VR pros about this one. Typically, captions should be at the bottom. The key is to ensure captions and text or info don't overlap. 💬 Speed It recommends sentences be in easily understood blocks, such as 2-3 sentences. This is too long. Aim for 1-2 lines per caption and don't go all the way across the screen. Size matters. 🎨 Color The guide makes it sound like it's OK to have only the text and no background. It needs a background for contrast. Too often, the text is hard to read because it blends in with the video. The standard is off-black background with off-white text. 🚫 Missing: Sounds and Speaker ID Caption sounds, music, and lyrics: [Dog barks] [Foreboding music] [Jaunty music] [Phone rings] Be sure it's clear who is speaking especially with an off-screen narrator. I'd like to work with Oculus to enhance the guidelines. #A11y #MerylMots
This is very helpful and should be posted everywhere so that more and more companies can be made aware. I had no idea what I didn't know until you helped shine so much light on accessibility Meryl Evans — your digital marketing left hand (She/her).
These are all important points to keep into considerations Meryl, appreciate your awesome works 👍
Hope they see this.
The guidelines are located here: https://developer.oculus.com/learn/design-accessible-vr-captions/ Thanks to Thomas Logan and Roland Olivier Dubois's post on these guidelines that had me looking up captions: https://equalentry.com/oculus-has-vr-accessibility-guidelines-now-but-audio-descriptions-are-missing/
