Do you remember when your mum would tell you to come inside and put a jumper on, or the cold will be the death of you? Well it’s time to find out if she was telling the truth!

Being exposed to cold will cause a cold
Colds are caused by viruses, not the weather. The reason colds and flu are more common in winter is that we tend to spend more time inside, in closed environments, where it is easier for viruses to spread.  But if you don’t get exposed to a cold or flu virus, you won’t catch a cold

Being cold will worsen your cold symptoms
Again, there is no evidence that this is the case, but if you’re sick with a cold or flu, you will probably feel better if you are resting at home in a warm bed.

It is best to stay inside in the warmth to prevent a cold.
Actually, the opposite might be true. Being inside in the warmth and in close contact with others increases the risk.  So getting outside in the fresh air and avoiding being stuck inside with others who are sick is the best way to avoid getting a cold.

If I have a cold I should avoid going out in the cold.
Being exposed to cold won’t worsen your symptoms but staying home in bed is the best way to avoid passing your illness on to others. And resting will help you to recover sooner.
