Dear friends, On October 11, Clarion West is collaborating with the Wing Luke Museum to host an evening of fun, learning and science fiction. We invite you to join us at the Wing Luke Museum for the exclusive opening reception of their newest exhibit: Worlds Beyond Here: The Expanding Universe of APA Science Fiction. Popular science fiction has had a disappointing lack of Asian Pacific American (APA) representation in American media, based primarily on stereotypes. Despite this, APAs have had and continue to have a large impact in science fiction, often behind the scenes, and a number of pioneering APA artists, actors, designers, writers, animators, and directors have persevered and inspired new generations of fans/creators with their stories and visions. For many Asian Pacific Americans, science fiction addresses issues related to identity, immigration and race, technology, morality and the human condition, all while capturing the imagination through exciting adventures in outer space and time travel.
Worlds Beyond Here will feature a mix of literary and pop culture works, encourages museum visitors to see how science fiction reflects the times they were written in. The creative process draws in ideas about how we build our world and how we imagine the future – and the artists featured in this exhibit inspire us to find our own vision. This reception, only open to specially invited guests, takes place from 6-8pm. Bring your friends! A short speaking program will begin at 6:30pm, and light refreshments will be provided. There is no entry fee. Festive attire and/or cosplay outfits are encouraged! Click here to RSVP for the event. At 8:30pm, following the reception, you are invited across the street to the Dynasty Room at 714 S King Street for a special science fiction trivia night hosted by Clarion West, the Wing Luke Museum, and Geeks Who Drink. Guest emcee Curtis Chen will get everyone in the spirit for a terrific night with trivia and prizes! No door fee. Thursday, October 11, 6-8pm
