Grab a pew for England rugby final, say churches

The organ music and scripture reading will be replaced with whoops and cheers on Saturday morning as churches screen the world cup rugby final.

Ice rinks, theatres, shopping centres and pubs are also gearing up to show England’s contest with South Africa in the absence of any major public screening.

When England beat New Zealand earlier this year in the cricket world cup final, fans watched the nail-biting game on a big screen in Trafalgar Square.

For the semi-final of the football world cup the summer before, England’s dreaming came to an end for 30,000 people at a public viewing held in Hyde Park.

This time, however, fans searching for sporting communion will have to look elsewhere. Trafalgar Square is already booked for Diwali
