Pictures show the wreckage debris of the US WWII warplane C-53 Skytrooper Dakota after it crashed in 1946, on the Gauli Glacier in the Bernese Alps, Switzerland.

The Dakota crashed on the Gauli Glacier on November 19, 1946, around a year after the war ended, and was a turning point in alpine rescue and an international media event.

The aircraft, coming from Austria bound for Italy, collided with the Gauli glacier in poor visibility, plummeting downwards at a height of 10,990ft.

On board were four crew members and eight passengers; among the eight passengers were high-ranking officers of the US armed forces with some of their relatives.

Several people were injured, but there were no fatalities.

A propeller of the WWII C-53 plane was found by three young people in the summer 2012 on the Gauli Glacier.

However, the hot temperatures of the last few weeks have made large parts of the machine visible, exposing wings, propellers and several other parts of the plane.

It is unclear if the plane will be completely recovered from the crash site.
