David Davis and Boris Johnson both hit a Brexit dead end

The former Brexit secretary’s ‘decision trees’ did not show the way to the exit Leavers dream about. So he called it quits

The last time David Davis resigned I was as baffled as everyone else. In 2008 he was David Cameron’s shadow home secretary and looked set fair to hold the office itself. Suddenly he stood down. He became the first front-bencher in history to develop a policy, secure collective agreement for it and then resign in order to express heated agreement with party policy.

It was the oddest of political manoeuvres. He started an argument with himself about civil liberties and contrived to come off second best.
