Mozambique: Over 80 insurgent-affected schools in Cabo Delgado to reopen in February
Artemisa Franco died in Maputo today at the age of 52. The renowned Mozambican social activist had been ill and hospitalised in a Maputo hospital for about a month.
Born in 1967, Artemisa Franco excelled in the struggle for the welfare of Mozambicans.
She regularly participated in major debates promoted by STV, with particular emphasis on the ‘Opinião no Feminino’ [Opinião no Feminino] programme with Fátima Mimbire and Ana Rita Sithole. She also participated in other STV programmes such as ‘Pontos de Vista’ [Points of View], Linha Aberta (Open Line) and ‘A Tarde é Sua’ [The Afternoon is Yours].
Artemisa Franco had a hard childhood. She lost her father at the age of 10 and married before the age of 18. She had three brothers, and her mother was a vendor in the Xipamanine and Central markets. In 2014 she participated in the electoral process in Cape Verde as an electoral observer.
Artemisa Franco leaves two daughters.

Among her many initiatives in social activism, Artemisa was the coordinator of the Platform for Peace and National Reconciliation at the Council of Religions of Mozambique (COREM), which organised Mozambique’s first National Summit on Peace and Reconciliation last year. She was also an observer at Sala da Paz during the Mozambican local elections held in October 2018.

She was a member of DHD (Human Rights and Development), of the AMMCJ (Association of Women of Mozambique of Legal Career; of the National Institute for Judicial Assistance (IPAJ); of Women in Law and Development in Africa (WiLDAF); Women Forum (Fórum Mulher) . Artemisa Franco also served as president of MBEU, Association for the Promotion, Economic and Socio-Cultural Development of Women.
Artemisa Franco was a lawyer, having studied in Maputo and in Lisbon.
