The CW's "feminist" Charmed reboot didn't come without its critics, particularly from the stars of the original series.

Just last week, original star Alyssa Milano shared that she wished she been involved in the making of the new series and now it seems like she could get that wish – at least at some point in the future.

Talking to Digital Spy and other press, Charmed boss Jennie Snyder Urman admitted that she'd "love" to see the original cast appear in the reboot, but it's not something that she'd want to see happen right away.

"It would be great, I'd love it, so we'll see," she said. "You have to dig in and let these characters... let the audience learn who they are and peel away layers and... hopefully you want the audience to fall in love with these three women, but that would be a dream. I would love it."

The rebooted series stars Madeleine Mantock, Melonie Diaz and Sarah Jeffery as sisters Macy, Mel and Maggie. It follows the trio as they discover that they're witches and band together as they learn to control their powers following a tragedy that sees their mother killed by dark forces.

While the show is obviously treading some new ground in its reboot, Urman added that she wanted to maintain the connection between the sisters in her version of Charmed, saying "at the root of it, it's a love story between three sisters".

"I think understanding that is really what it's about: women kicking ass, changing the world and fighting evil," she added. "It's empowering, it's wish fulfilment and it's relatable – sisters are relatable – so I think that was the most important thing.

"We loved the original, so we took so many pieces from it, in terms of the mythology, in terms of the structure and the Whitelighters and different villains and all of the beautiful groundwork that they've laid. We've tried to then look at what that means in our world today,10 years later."

Another way in which the reboot has shaken things up slightly is in the fact that one of the sisters, Mel (Diaz), is a lesbian and Urman said that they were "mindful" of their characters' diversity and sexuality while creating the show.

"You can't downplay the importance of seeing yourself on-screen, and seeing your relationships validated," she said.

"So that was one of the things that we were really mindful of in doing this reboot. Letting different characters be heroes is really a big part of what I'm excited about. You don't want to be 'giving medicine' and you want it to be a show that is fun... but I think it's also a show about the need for change and how to affect change."

Charmed premieres in the US on The CW on October 14.
