You can just go down to the store and get a bag of succulent and cactus potting mix, or you can make it yourself.

To make your own potting mix, you will need three ingredients:

• All purpose potting soil
• Sand
• Perlite

The base should be all purpose potting soil that is lightweight. Coarse sand is the best, and you should avoid using dirty sand. The perfect formula is: 3 parts soil, 2 parts sand, 1 part pumite. Mix these well and your succulent potting mix is ready.

Drainage

We already mentioned that the succulents do not like too much water. That means that you need to pay attention to two things:drainage and watering. The container should have holes on the bottom so the water can easily drain. If you want to go for a fancy container that has no possibility for holes, then you should use one trick. On the bottom of the empty container place rocks, so they cover the bottom. Then, you can add the soil. This will help the water drain down to the rocks.
