Disney and Pixar's Incredibles 2 has scored the biggest launch ever for an animated film in the US, with $180 million at the domestic box office over the weekend.

The previous record holder for biggest launch ever for an animated film was Finding Dory, with $135 million.

Incredibles 2 also had the eighth-biggest opening of all time, and beat Beauty and the Beast's $174.6 million – meaning it now boasts the biggest opening in history for a PG-rated film.

"The movie played to everybody. You definitely don't get to this level without reaching across all segments of the audience, including adults and teens," said Disney distribution chief Cathleen Taff (via THR).

"Our evenings were stronger than with most animated films."

It's hardly surprising, since Fandango very recently confirmed that the long-awaited sequel had also broken its pre-sales record set by Finding Dory.

Meanwhile, the first reviews for the film suggest that although it's pretty damn super, it's not as good as the original.

In other news, the Brad Bird-directed film will now warn fans about the strobe lighting, after one moviegoer's tweet went viral.

According to Twitter user Veronica Lewis, the Pixar superhero film is "filled with tons of strobe/flashing lights" that could potentially trigger effects in those who are photosensitive.

The Incredibles 2 swoops into cinemas in the UK on Friday, July 13. The film is out now in the US.
