A BRAZILIAN plastic surgeon who went on the run after his female patient died from bottom injections was arrested yesterday.
Cops in Rio detained Dr Denis Furtado, dubbed Dr BumBum, after he allegedly attempted to flee following the death of mum-of-two Lilian Calixto.
Furtado was considered a fugitive of justice when officers were unable to locate him after a judge issued an arrest warrant for the surgeon.
HSBC bank manager Calixto, 46, travelled to the Brazilian city to undergo the procedure at the home of the surgeon to the stars.
Calixto, from Cuiaba, reportedly arrived at Furtado’s apartment in the upmarket Barra da Tijuca district of Rio on Saturday night.
It is believed she had booked to have polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)_fillers injected to make her bum bigger and a hormone implant to treat menopause.
Soon after receiving the injections at 10pm, she reportedly fell ill and started gasping for air, and her condition quickly deteriorated.
Furtado took her to the local Barra D’Or hospital, where she was admitted at 11pm in an "extremely severe condition, unresponsive to manoeuvres".
Police yesterday arrested the nurse who assisted in the procedure, as well as Furtado’s girlfriend after the patient died a few hours later at 1am.
Furtado accidentally injected the filler into Ms Calixto's arteries, causing a fatal clot which ruptured her heart, sources said.
Furtado is a common fixture on Brazilian TV and has more than 647,000 followers on Instagram.
He claims to have performed more than 8,000 bottom enlargement surgeries and counts the rich and famous among his clients.
The shamed physician has posted dozens of "before and after" photos on Instagram showing off the bottoms of his patients.
A recent video shows him with Flavia Tamario, a contestant on last year's popular Miss Bumbum competition.
He kisses Flavia and calls her his "most grateful patient" after she proudly says: "I'm here with Dr Bumbum!"
On his Facebook page, Furtado boasts: "I have gained my different nicknames and the most recent is Dr BumBum and that makes me very proud."
The famous surgeon is reported to have a very chequered past and, according to Globo, is banned from practising in Rio.
It claims he is "outlawed" from the city and only has registration to work in the regional councils of Goias and Federal District.
He is also alleged to have been charged four times for practising medicine illegally and other crimes against his patients.
Niveo Steffen, president of the Brazilian Plastic Surgery Society, has warned of "non-specialists" like him carrying out dangerous procedures.
He said: "You cannot perform plastic surgery inside an apartment. Many people are selling a dream, a fantasy to patients in an unethical way."
Furtado even did consultations over WhatsApp, according to one of his patients who said: "I think he's a very good butcher."
Brazil has the second highest rate of plastic surgeries in the world, after the US, with around 1.2million procedures every year.
And Dr Steffen claimed many women have died from injections of synthetic polymers including polymethylmethacrylate, otherwise known as acrylic glass.
PMMA is a "rigid, transparent and colourless, thermoplastic material" which is popular filler because of its "low cost", according to the Aesthetic Surgery Journal.
And the NHS warns that, if the procedure is not carried out perfectly, misuse of PMMA can lead to "tissue death, permanent blindness or a pulmonary embolism".
The couple, who had been married for 20 years, have a 13-year-old daughter.
Ms Calixto also had a 23-year-old son from a previous relationship.
He said: "She went on Saturday night and was due to return that night, it was going to be a quick thing. She told the family that she was going to have an implant because of the menopause.
"At 8.30am on Sunday, this doctor called me telling me there had been a complication and that they needed someone to release her body.
Ms Calixto’s husband, Osmar Jamberci, told Brazil’s Extra newspaper that she had told family and friends she was going to Rio to have the hormone implant, but didn’t mention the butt enlargement procedure.
Ms Calixto’s stepdaughter, Alessandro Jambert, told Brazil’s Extra newspaper she was the only one who knew about the buttom surgery and said she had chose to have the procedure with Furtado “on the recommendation of others”.
She said: “Her friends did it, liked it and recommended him. He is a really famous doctor, and she was going to have it done in his own apartment.”
A friend, who asked not to be named, said that Ms Calixto “was very meticulous, very careful, really organised."
Rio de Janeiro’s Regional Medical Council (Cremerj) yesterday said they had opened an investigation into the incident.
An investigation is also underway by the city’s 16th civil police division.
