Michelin stars in their eyes: why hospitality careers beckon

Bronte Williams has loved food for as long as she can remember. Fuelled by a lifelong passion for all things culinary, Williams enrolled at Sydney's William Blue College of Hospitality Management after finishing year 12.

Now 21, Williams is heading to Japan to undertake a college-organised six-month industry placement.

William Blue, part of Torrens University, offers degrees and diplomas in commercial cookery, tourism and hospitality management.

Does Instagram influence where customers dine out?

The social media channel boasts drool-worthy food photos, but how much does it impact restaurant choice?

Restaurateurs are installing new lighting, purchasing new servingware and even cooking up more photogenic menu items to catch the attention of Instagram’s prolific food photographers. While these Insta-influencers may have thousands of followers, how much impact do they have on consumers’ choice of restaurant?

To answer that question, SevenRooms, a restaurant reservation and guest management platform, commissioned research and consulting company YouGov to poll 1,206 consumers. Here are the results, released in a report at the beginning of December.

Fair Work inspectors coming to a cafe near you!

Fair Work inspectors are conducting surprise visits at dozens of restaurants and cafes in popular Melbourne city dining strips today following concern about the widespread underpayment of workers.

Inspectors are currently in Degraves Street and Hardware Lane, speaking to business owners, managers and employees to check that workers are being paid correctly.

Fair Work Ombudsman Sandra Parker said protecting the rights of vulnerable workers in the fast food, restaurant and cafe sector was a priority for the agency.
