Author Interview

Tell us about yourself.

Hi, my name is Yvette Bentley, who writes under the name of Yvette Wilson Bentley, which attributes to the memory of my late parents and grandmother.  I am a native of Louisville, KY, the oldest of five sisters and the mother of one adult son. I have been a writer from childhood and decided to begin publishing my works in 2012.  A few of my favorite pastimes include reading, bowling, traveling, and spending quality time with family & friends.

Who are the important women in your life? Why are they important to you?

The women that are important to me include an inner circle of several friends, a former employer, and my fiancé’s mother and aunts. Collectively, they are important to me because they remind me regularly that one of the most important things in life is to rely on God’s grace, mercy, strength and wisdom in all things.  Individually, these women demonstrate unconditional love, they listen to me without judgment, they leave it up to me whether or not I choose to take their suggestions, and they love me in spite of myself not always being the most loveable person that I can be.

What advice do you have for women who have been hurt by other women and are afraid to try new friendships?

Be thorough and honest with yourself as you consider the following:

  • Examine that situation to determine whether or not you played a role.
  • Ask yourself why is it that you don’t want to try new relationships.
  • Ask yourself are there others’ characteristics that remind you of self.
  • Ask yourself are you honestly and earnestly the friend to others that you would like them to be to you.

What advice do you have for making new friends or connections?

  • Do not judge in haste.
  • Rather than criticize, look for opportunities to be helpful
  • Take the time to learn the source by the actions of others before judging or condemning the.

Briefly describe your chapter in When Women Connect.

Divine Mentoring is my tribute to one of my greatest next-door neighbors who stressed how vital it is to trust God and take the high road when faced with adversities.
