How to Use Basal Metabolic Rate to Help Make Your Fitness Regime more Effective

July 19, 2018

Your body is burning calories all the time, regardless of whether you’re working out or sitting. You may not have been aware of this—what with popular weight loss sources alienating calories as such a terrible monster—but your body requires calories to perform its basic functions.

If your heart is pumping regularly, you’re breathing naturally, and all your organs are functioning as they should, that amounts to almost 60 to 75 percent of the total calories you burn in a day! And without lifting a single finger!

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)

These calories that are required to keep your basic bodily functions operating properly are known as your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). Also known as the Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR), knowing this can help you create a more effective fitness strategy.

The largest amounts of calories are burned in the muscle, which is why men generally have a larger BMR than women, who have less muscle on their frame.

Whether you’re trying to gain or lose weight, knowing your BMR can help you calculate the number of calories you need per day and to design a calorie burning fitness regime according to that.

BMR for Weight Loss

If you eat fewer calories than your body needs to complete its basic functions, you are going to lose weight. However, your activity levels will also affect how many calories you burn per day. Going too far below the calorie intake line will result in weakness and malnutrition, which is not something you want to happen.

To lose weight, you need to eat 500 calories less than your daily requirement, which should result in a loss of a pound per week.

However, women should consume at least 1200 calories per day, while men should consume 1800 a day. If you lie within the danger range after subtracting those 500 calories, you may want to consider burning those calories through exercises rather than by eating less.

As your weight decreases, your BMR will too, which means you now need fewer calories to conduct your normal bodily procedures. Much of this loss of BMR is due to your loss of muscle, which can be recovered through strength training and muscle building exercises.

To lose even more weight per week, add more exercises to your fitness regime instead of eating less. An additional 250 calories burned through exercising will make you lose another half a pound.
