SOUTHPORT, NC (WECT) - Potter's Seafood on the Old Yacht Basin in Southport has been in the Potter family for five generations.

Royce Potter's great-great-grandfather started the business in 1899.

At the time, the yacht basin was not even there. It was just a small creek that led up to his house.

"He would bring his fishing boat in every day and sell his catch straight out of the boat right in his front yard," Potter said.

And for the next five generations, that tradition would continue.

Today, fishermen with Potter's seafood fish for anything from shrimp to flounder on the in shore side, to snapper and grouper on the offshore.

"All of the boats come in right here in the Old Yacht Basin," Potter said. "They unload and we can provide it fresh, catch of the day, straight to the public."

Potter says people who come to Potter's Seafood are usually pretty amazed at the unique seafood experience.

"We do things differently than everybody else," Potter said.

They are best known for their shrimp.

"Shrimp is our specialty," Potter said. "I own the shrimp boat, and run the shrimp boat myself. So there again we've got quality control from start to finish."
