14 DAY TRIAL // Endless OS' community manager Michael Hall informed us today about the general availability of Endless OS 3.4, a major release of the Linux-based computer operating system that introduces numerous new features and improvements.
Packed with dozens of stability and performance improvements, the Endless OS 3.4 release is one of those major ones that you'll have to install on your personal computer if you're running the Linux-based Endless OS. It features an enhanced GNOME 3.26 desktop environment with smarter updates to help you manage data consumption on limited data plans.
Additionally, Endless OS 3.4 marks the introduction of the Endless Companion App for Android smartphones, which will be available in the coming weeks and promises to let users view content from their Endless OS computers on their Android phones while enjoying the features of the native Endless OS apps.
"You will soon be able to use your Android phone to view content from your computer so that more people can benefit from Endless OS’ native apps at the same time. With Endless OS 3.4, your computer will now be ready to share content with the Endless Companion App as soon as it is publicly released," said Michael Hall in today's announcement.
App Center improvements, new and updated apps
The App Center has been updated as well in Endless OS 3.4 to show users Endless OS system updates alongside app updates, as well as to notify users when new software versions are available for installation or about downloaded updates that are ready for installation.
The default web browser and office suite were updated to Chromium 66 and LibreOffice 6.0, and Endless OS 3.4 is powered by the Linux 4.15 kernel, which offers better hardware support and mitigations against the widely mediatized Meltdown and Spectre security vulnerabilities.
The GNOME desktop environment also picked up some improvements in this major update to display system tray icons in the bottom panel alongside the standard system icons, and a collection of new Indonesian wallpapers to beautify your Endless OS desktop.
Last but not least, Endless OS 3.4 adds the AdBlock Plus extension for Chromium and Google Chrome web browsers by default to block unwanted banners, ads, pop-ups, cross-site tracking, and other malware, and the Endless OS SDK was bumped to version 4 with many enhancements for those who want to write native apps.
Endless OS 3.4 is now available to download from the official website, but existing users can upgrade to this release through the built-in update system if they're using version 3.3.18. Those using Endless OS 3.3.17 or earlier will have to upgrade to version 3.3.18 before installing Endless OS 3.4.
