ELK RIVER-A 20-year-old Brainerd man admitted to police he drove to St. Cloud with the intent to scare a woman, and proceeded to allegedly stab her twice with a machete.

According to the criminal complaint filed against Trevor Cluever, St. Cloud police were dispatched to a report of an assault Monday, April 15, at an apartment in St. Cloud. The victim told police she met Cluever, whom she knows, in the lobby of the apartment building after letting him in. He pulled out a large machete style knife and swung it at her, hitting her right shoulder, and again swung the machete at her, hitting her on her right wrist.

The woman then ran to her apartment and locked the door. He followed her and kicked in the door and entered. He pulled out a smaller knife and cut his own neck, the complaint stated. A neighbor entered the open door and called 911. Officers saw a 4-inch laceration on the victim's right wrist.

Cluever then walked out of the apartment building and officers located him in the parking lot. Cluever told police, "I'm probably going to prison, but not for attempted murder or anything. I just tried to cause her emotional pain by slashing her," the complaint stated. He told officers he lives in Brainerd and he drove to her place with the intent of harming himself and scaring the victim. He said she let him into the apartment building and he slashed her twice with a machete. He then used the machete to slash his own throat and pulled a smaller knife out and stabbed himself twice.

Cluever was charged Wednesday in Sherburne County District Court in Elk River with three felonies-two counts of first-degree burglary while using a dangerous weapon and for assaulting a person in an apartment building and second-degree assault using a dangerous weapon.
