Hi! This is Greg Weaver of The Hard Modes. On August 31 from 6-11pm EDT, we're teaming up with 4 other amazing video game music jazz bands to stream a concert online in an effort to bring this great community of musicians and fans together.
FREE PLAY: an online jazz festival of video game music
FREE PLAY will feature back-to-back hour-long sets from each band, and the show - true to its namesake - is 100% free to stream online. That the show comes at no cost to our viewers is important, as the point is to create and share art with the broader community, and leaving it free creates the most accessible environment for every type of listener.
The current festival itinerary and lineup, which features bands from 3 different countries, is currently as follows (final time slots may vary slightly):

Each band will be streaming their shows on their individual Twitch pages. To attend the festival, simply head to their page and rock out! Exact streaming URLs will be listed closer to the festival on this page, on our Facebook event, and on www.thehardmodes.com.
At the end of each set, the bands will pass viewers to the next band's show so you won't miss a beat.
THE MUSIC
The bands participating in FREE PLAY all share a common language in both video game music and jazz. From swing to latin to funk, you'll hear your favorite tunes in a new light.
Furthermore, we make improvisation a focal point of our arrangements, allowing soloists to extend the game music we love in a deeply personal way.
Each band has a different build - from a guitar trio to a pair of varying sextets - adding to the variety of experiences you'll have watching the performances. You may even hear the same core melody played by more than one group, but due to the nature of this music, each play will be uniquely its own.
YOUR SUPPORT
Again, listening to the performances is 100% free but we have created this GoFundMe for two reasons:
1. We are asking you to support the creative processes of the bands and musicians involved.
All of the musicians participating in FREE PLAY are doing so because they’re passionate about playing this music and bringing it to you in an unticketed event! They’re spending countless hours preparing this music and perfecting their craft without expectation of payment.
That said, the proceeds of this GoFundMe will be divided up equally between all the musicians in each band, and each musician will have the freedom to use the money for whatever endeavour they so choose.
Personally, I will be using any potential cut I receive to fund recording sessions for The Hard Modes’ upcoming album, which I hope to record this fall.
Note: Our guest artist from Japan, N!ESS, has specifically asked us not to send them any proceeds from our crowdfunding--they will be playing 100% pro bono, which will allow us to reach our goal more quickly and allocate more funds to reason #2!
2. We want to come together to have a tangible positive impact on the gaming community in support of a great charity.
A percentage of the proceeds from this GoFundMe will be going to the AbleGamers charity. AbleGamers "[utilizes] fun to bring inclusion and improved quality of life for people with disabilities through the power of video games." Our goal is to raise at least $1,000 for this great cause. FUNDING BREAKDOWN
There are approximately 25 musicians who will be participating in this event and benefiting from this GoFundMe (again, N!ESS is not included in these numbers because they are not involved in the campaign).
Once we reach $50/band member, a percentage of the money will go to AbleGamers. This $50 amount is based on the absolute minimum that my bandmates and I personally require to perform live in our hometown.
Some very rough math (pre-fees, etc.) based on our goal of $3,000:
- $3,000 raised
- $1,250 to musicians ($50/person)
- $1,750 left over
-- 60% goes to AbleGamers: $1,050
-- 40% would go to the musicians: $700 (resulting in $78/person overall)

FREE PLAYは、連続に各バンドの一時間セットを特集し、名前と一致するように、ストリーミング配信は１００％ただです。演奏を無料にした重要な理由は、目的は作った芸術を広範なコミュニティとシェアするからです。無料にすることにより、各種の聴取者にとって鑑賞しやすい環境を作ります。
