USA to Germany for Oktoberfest: $400+, Check Your Local Airport!

While planning a trip for a friend I came across a fantastic deal currently offered by American Airlines and her Oneworld Alliance partners. Numerous airports have round trips to Germany this fall for Oktoberfest and the rest of October.  I count this as at least the 3rd sale for the festival that American has launched this year, which is great news for “Germanophiles” and beer lovers. Unlike the earlier sales this is pretty wide open for departures: I checked half a dozen airports of friends and family and nearly all of them had similar pricing. Essentially: Berlin, Frankfurt, and Munich all price between $400 and $476 round trip, a stupendous deal from a regional airport to Europe, especially during a major festival. The airports I personally verified are: St. Louis, Kansas City, Lexington (KY), Seattle, San Diego, Raleigh Durham, and Omaha. However, every time a sale is this widespread, I can guarantee many more markets will have it available.

Booking this takes a little effort. First, these prices show on Google Flights but often reprice when you reach the final itinerary. What worked for me was finding the sale dates on Google Flights, then searching on your favorite online travel agency like Orbitz or Expedia. You’ll find sale prices available for late September and most of October. These will ticket at the listed price.

Second, a little flexibility is required. These prices are good for the final week of Oktoberfest and most of October, but if you want to make the festival you’ll probably have to fly home on Monday October 7th or Tuesday October 8th. Some options (See St. Louis above) have good Sunday prices, but as you might expect, they are usually pricing at $800 – $1300.

These are basic economy prices. When I checked, main cabin was $160 more, meaning most routes will provide seat choice, checked bag, and meals for less than $600. I have no idea how long these prices will remain but if they are like previous sales they will disappear in short order. So book now if you’re looking to hit Germany this fall.
