How to Create Strong Presentations: Prepare
|
|
Greetings!
I'm often asked, "What's the most important element in giving a good presentation?"
Answer: preparation. If you don't take the time to rehearse, no matter how well you know your material, you are not going to give a good presentation.
"But I want to maintain my spontaneity," you protest.
Rehearsals should increase your spontaneity, not inhibit it. When I prepare, I can answer questions and come back to my material without a hitch. My delivery, which varies every time, is confident and professional. My rehearsals aren't meant to memorize my lines word for word, except for key phrases that add punch to the presentation. They are, however, meant to help me memorize flow.
How do I know when I've given a good presentation? People are engaged and asking questions throughout. Audience members come up after the presentation and ask more questions. Members of the audience ask you to give the presentation to another audience.
It happens more often than not. It's the benefits of being prepared.

Another Chance to Build Credibility through Consistency
Did you miss my presentation on the essential elements in any style guide at the Community Business Partnership? Well, you're in luck. Old Town Alexandria Connections (OTAC) has invited me to repeat the session at their lunchtime meeting on Wednesday, July 11. OTAC is a closed group, however, so you need to secure an invite from
one of the members
.
Tell them I sent you so they don't wonder why you're contacting them out of the blue.
Big companies and organizations know their credibility relies on their consistency. One of the ways they do that is to create a style guide. A style guide takes the messiness out of the English language. Use the Oxford comma or not? Spell it advisor or adviser? (I know, I know. You spell "it" i-t. Old joke.) Use AM and PM or a.m. and p.m.? All are correct. But which will your company use? Join me as I walk you through the essential elements in any style guide. Download the CVC Style Guide at
https://goo.gl/DMcvx3
and follow along. (Not required. But it's free, so why not?)
Hope to see you there!

From my blog: Celebrating a Grand American Tradition
|
While it’s stylish to idolize the U.S. Constitution and worship our Founding Fathers as men united in a single purpose, it’s fake news. The Constitution was created by a handful of delegates who compromised until they had a document the majority could endorse. It was not unanimous, however.
