Transformative impact of new technologies unveiled at Made in the UK

What does the factory of the future look like? For today’s manufacturers, the answer is increasingly connected. Manufacturers need to constantly innovate, stay relevant, and stay cost-effective.

New technologies are disrupting ‘traditional’ manufacturing and speakers at Insider’s Made in the UK conference will delve into the world of the new to provide insight into the latest technologies from artificial intelligence, to virtual reality to gamification and more.

Delegates will hear from Marcus Thornley, chief executive at Play, a fast-growing tech startup that uses game approaches and experience design to drive engagement, habit-formation and behavioural change at work.

He said: "Gamification in the workplace is fast gaining traction. The gamification industry itself is estimated to be worth $2.8bn and there’s a clear business case for the workplace, as organisations look to boost employee engagement to improve business success."

His session will cover how manufacturers can use gamification to make staff more productive. He will cover how companies can engage workers on the production line by empowering them and creating a sense of shared responsibility. He said: “When employees understand how they contribute to the success of the organisation, they are much more likely to be engaged and motivated in their efforts.”

He added that gamification shouldn’t be seen as a cure-all and his session will tackle how companies can avoid falling into the trap of rolling a platform out that no-one uses or perceives as valuable.

Joining Marcus Thornley on the session will be Mark Woods, co-founder and chief technical officer, Amplyfi; Anders Hakfelt, VP product and marketing, Ultrahaptics; and Alan Yee, engineering director, Contechs.

Disruptive technologies will be the focus of one of four discussions at Made in the UK, with others focusing on manufacturing in space; connected vehicles; and clean energy. The event is held as part of the International Business Festival.
