BGU suspicious package was “false alarm”

The cordon has been lifted

A letter which sparked an evacuation and bomb squad investigation at the Bishop Grosseteste University campus this afternoon was a “false alarm”.

Lincolnshire Police were called to the university off Longdales Road at around 12.30pm on Friday March 8.

They had received reports that a suspicious letter had been delivered to the campus.

Two buildings were evacuated and a police cordon was put in place for around two hours.

Students, staff and reporters gathered around the cordon and watched as a team from the Royal Logistic Corps Bomb Disposal unit arrived on site.

Officers were seen carrying a bag into the branded vehicle and appeared to examine the contents.

The cordon was lifted just before 2pm.

Lincolnshire Police said in a statement: “The package at BGU has been deemed safe by experts. There was no danger to the public.

“We are pleased to report this was a false alarm and appreciate your understanding.

“Protocol and expert advice was followed at every stage to ensure public safety.”
