After the damp squib that was WWE Super ShowDown, it feels like we're having a do-over with the first ever WWE Stomping Grounds.

A number of matches from Jeddah are happening all over again (some with a twist, many without), plus of course we've got the bonus of some actual women's matches too.

Read on for six things we learned as Monday Night Raw built to Stomping Grounds with a wrestling-packed evening.

1. Incredible wrestling can (almost) make up for all of WWE's other problems

We're still pretty lost at sea with WWE's medium-term plans at the moment.

The WILD CARD RULE has gone from a quirky annoyance to a constant thorn in the side of our enjoyment of WWETV.

We've gone from not being able to tell who is on what brand, to not caring, to realising that none of the people behind the scenes on either show really care either.

The only reason for the faux brand split still to exist is to legitimise the sheer number of title belts on offer – itself a problem we've had with the WWE for quite a while.

And yet.

On an evening when we lost track of brand-jumping wrestlers (Kofi Kingston and The New Day, Kevin Owens, Daniel Bryan, Roman Reigns etc. etc. etc.) by packing the three hours of Raw with total non-stop action we almost didn't mind.

Opening with a Fatal Five-Way Elimination match, ending with a Seth Rollins/Daniel Bryan one-on-one match (eventually), sprinkling in a six-man two-out-of-three-falls match, a rare WWE Women's Tag Match and even rarer Gallows and Anderson bout (and more) made for a wrestling-packed night of action.

And when you've got oodles of good wrestling, you can forgive so much else.

2. Ricochet will face Samoa Joe for the WWE United States Championship at Stomping Grounds

Back to that Fatal Five-Way, we saw Ricochet overcome some massive men and massive odds in The Miz, Braun Strowman, Cesaro and Bobby Lashley to earn the right to face Samoa Joe at the weekend.

Sure, he needed a little bit of help from the already-eliminated Lashley and Cesaro to get Braun Strowman out of the way, but all's fair in love, war and Fatal Five-Way Elimination Matches.

He eventually dispatched The Miz and even fended off the inevitable post-match attack from Joe, and now goes one-on-one with the Destroyer at Stomping Grounds with the US Title on the line.

Ricochet has tasted gold in the WWE before (well, in NXT anyway) as North American Champion, and now's the chance for him to make a massive (630) Splash on the main roster.

It won't be easy, but whatever happens you can't say he doesn't deserve the shot.

3. Baron Corbin doesn't yet have a guest referee for his WWE Universal Championship match with Seth Rollins

In one of those Super ShowDown rematches no-one really asked for, Baron Corbin faces Seth Rollins at WWE Stomping Grounds once more in a bid to win the WWE Universal Championship.

This time around though, Corbin will have a Special Guest Referee helping him get what eluded him in Saudi Arabia.

The only problem is that Seth Rollins is smarter than the average champ, and has been warning off possible barcodes from getting involved.

Seth Rollins plus a steel chair meant the likes of Elias, EC3 and Eric Young thought better of helping Corbin out by being his man in the middle, which leaves that vacancy still open a few days before Sunday's match.

It didn't stop Corbin putting Rollins down after his hard-fought double victory against SDLive's Daniel Bryan in the main event, but with that (ahem) ref wild card situation and Beast lurking in the wings, he'll be wary going into the weekend.

So, who could it be? Brock Lesnar? Shane McMahon? Vince McMahon? Stephanie McMahon?

Your guess is as good as ours at this stage, but whatever happens we're assuming that Seth can overcome and put an end to Corbin's title hopes (for now).

4. The WWE has until SummerSlam to make us care about the Women's Tag Team Championships

We were delighted to get a WWE Women's Tag Team Championship match last night on Raw.

Technically, the belts can be defended on any bit of WWETV, from Raw, to SmackDown Live, to NXT, to NXTUK to Main Event to any bit of social media the WWE puts out.

In practice that's meant... hardly any title matches at all, in part due to the non-existent division.

And even last night's match barely felt like a title match on its own terms.

Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross fell just short due to some incidental interference from Bayley, who Alexa is facing this weekend for the WWE Raw Championship belt.

Lex used that to convince Nikki to be in her corner come Sunday, which is fine in and of itself, but the tag belts being used as a prop for the singles title doesn't sit easy.

After all that fuss when they were first unveiled and the genuine efforts from Sasha Banks, Bayley and now The IIconics, the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship feels on life support.

The WWE has just a few short months to resurrect the titles and make us care, and the only way to do that is get a tag team division together made up of some real women's tag teams.

If that means raiding NXT(UK) or signing up a load more talented women, then so be it. But something has to change and fast if we're ever going to value these belts.

5. Gallows and Anderson are poised for a comeback

Gallows and Anderson have had their ups and downs in the WWE over the last three years.

From hard-hitting title challengers (and one-time Raw Tag Team Champions) to able comedy skitters to hardly ever being on telly, they've been everywhere and nowhere.

We've had false dawns before, but it does feel as though their time may be coming again.

Sure, they lost last night in a tough match against on-off foes The Usos, but they gave a pretty good showing of themselves after a pep talk from former Club leader AJ Styles.

And it's via the support of Styles (and/or Finn Bálor) that you feel that Gallows and Anderson can drag themselves back into the spotlight.

They came to WWE on a wave of Bullet Club hype, and it's when they've flirted with that history that they've managed to grab the attention of the WWE Universe.

We're not necessarily talking about a full-fledged Club Reunion, but if they can capture some of that energy (and lean on some of their past associates), now's the time for Gallows and Anderson to launch themselves back into the big time.

6. Roman Reigns needs a new challenge by the end of the summer

It's not just the WWE Women's Tag Team division that needs a reboot.

Roman Reigns's return to action after beating leukaemia (again) was naturally one of the most well-received comebacks in WWE history, but it's fair to say he's been treading water since then.

At WrestleMania 35 he beat Drew McIntyre in a singles match and has now circled round to... a singles match against Drew McIntyre.

This after a match with Shane McMahon in Saudi Arabia which was decided by the intervention of... Drew McIntyre.

It's not a matter of trying to make fetch happen, but of fetch happening over and over and over again, each time a little bit less fun than the previous.

Ostensibly this is all about Reigns vs McMahon (though in a fair fight without McIntyre et al, surely it's a foregone conclusion).

And we sort of understand that story, even as it flits between brands and sucks up way too much TV time week-by-week.

But it needs a focal point, and it needs an end, and if it doesn't have a conclusive one by SummerSlam, Reigns will have a mountain to climb (again) when it comes to winning back the affections of the WWE Universe.
