Facebook introduces alerts in News Feeds to update privacy settings

Facebook, in order to comply with new privacy rules going into effect later this week in Europe, will begin sending alerts in the News Feed to prompt folks to update their privacy settings.

The prompts have already gone out in Europe, where the General Data Protection Regulation rules (GDPR) are set to begin. Folks elsewhere will get these prompts as they are rolled out.

Users who've already checked out their settings won't find much new. The social network will show you which advertisers are tracking you and have your contact information, and give you the ability to delete them from your profile tracker.

In the coming weeks, Facebook says it will tell people:

—How it uses data from partners for advertising

—How it uses face recognition

—Updates to its terms of service.

Facebook says users will see a summary of the choices they've made in the past, and won't see information about features they've already disabled or decided not to use.

"For example, if you've already disabled face recognition or ads based on data from partners, we won't ask you to turn them on," said Facebook in a blog post. "Regardless of the choices you make now, you can change your mind by visiting or at any time."
