A word from the Principal...
Welcome,
As we race through the Summer Term, I am taking stock of where we are and what we have
achieved, as well as what else there is to come this year. To do this, I wanted the input of our Head
Boy and Girl to find out, from a child’s prospective, what it’s like to attend Ludgvan School. The
staff all work incredibly hard to provide the best they can for all of our children, but it’s nice to
hear how that is viewed from the other side.
Hello everyone,
Head Girl and Head Boy here. We are going to inform you all about the amazing events which are upcoming
and the events that have taken place, such as the three kwik cricket teams which contained our very own
hard-working fellow pupils. At this sporting event, Ludgvan included a girls team, an A team and a B team.
They all worked extremely hard, even with the very unfortunate weather which occured at the playing fields.
Two of our teams have qualified and will go to the County finals.
Last friday, 14 ludgvan students embarked on the Scillonian prepared to face the strong currents… we
thought. Finally, reaching the seemed to be long lost Isles of Scilly, we only had one more challenge to
fight… OTILLO!
As Year 6 students, we are very nearly at the end of our time at Ludgvan School . We are having many
enjoyable trips as SATS is now long gone . It is very sad that we are leaving , as we will miss everyone very
much . It will be very odd not being here, but we are also very excited. On Monday we are even going to the
Isles of Scilly!
One of the best things about Ludgvan School is how all the teachers cooperate with the pupils to help our
understanding. You never feel underestimated by the teachers and they always take into consideration
everyone’s opinions. The sports are incredibly fun, even the pupils who aren’t sporty love them. The teachers
join in and make it excitingly competitive but never scary.
Thank you so much for reading this,
Your Sincerely ,
Jenna Morrall and Gabriel Tswei .
We have lots of exciting events planned for the final 6 weeks, so please come along and support
them, we look forward to seeing you.
Kind regards,
Adam Anderson
Principal

Excellence...
A word from the Principal...
Cricket
On 5th June, we took 3 teams to St Just CC to
compete in the Penwith Cricket Finals. Our Girls
team were fantastic and the only girls team who
were able to bowl overarm. This resulted in
some brilliant results and qualification for the
County finals later in the month. We also took
two boys teams who represented the school
brilliantly with our B team playing very well and
narrowly missing out on victory on a number
of occasions. Our A team performed brilliantly
throughout and won all of their matches, earning
qualification to the County finals. Well done to
all of our players, cricket is definitely one of our
strongest sports at the moment.
Y4 Football
On Thursday 6th June, our Y4 football team
took part in the Penwith Championships and
were amazing! In the league phase, they beat
every team that turned up, finished with 5
wins from 5 and a goal difference of +13! The
final was a repeat of the league match against
Heamoor and although Ludgvan dominated
proceedings, a breakaway goal from Heamoor
gave them a 1-0. Despite this defeat, the team
still qualified for the County finals, which they
played on Monday 10th. Having been drawn
in a very tough group, Ludgvan started out
with a 7-0 win! However, 2 defeats followed,
which resulted in a final position of 3rd in our
group, a great performance from a team that
is improving week on week through playing
together at Ludgvan Lions. Well done all.

Excellence...
A word from the Principal...
Jenna
Congratulations to Jenna, who is one of our most
talented gymnasts. She recently competed in a
competition against gymnasts across the South
West and won the floor routine category. What’s
more impressive is that she achieved this in the
12yrs-16yrs age group, despite only being in Y6.
Jenna trains incredibly hard, over 12 hours per
week and is proof that you can achieve great
things when you are dedicated and determined.
Well done Jenna.
Oliver
Well done to Oliver N who won 2nd in the
young handler category at the Royal Cornwall
Show. You may have seen Oliver recently in
the series ‘Devon and Cornwall’ on Channel 4
where he was an important part of one of the
episodes. It is great to see someone pursuing
their interests and making the most of the outdoor
environment that we are so fortunate.
Frances
Congratulations to Frances who recently competed
in the Penzance Swimming Club Championships.
Frances performed brilliantly and won 3
medals! Silver in the 100m freestyle and bronzes
in the 50m backstroke and 100m individual medley.
Well done Frances!

Endurance...
Otillo
On Friday 8th, our 14-strong Swimrun team from Y4-Y6, travelled
to the Isles of Scilly to compete in a junior version of the
Otillo, a World Series Swimrun event. In total over 300 children
from pre-school to KS4 took part.
The day started with the entire team, staff and parent supporters
huddled for shelter before boarding the Scillonian.
The weather didn’t improve all day, but at no point were our
children’s spirits dampened. The sailing to St Mary’s took
almost 3 hours due to the strong winds and rough sea, but our
children battled through and emerged at the other end ready
for their race.
Once changed into their race kit (wetsuits and trainers must be worn for all running and swimming),
our team headed to the start line. We had a number of first time participants and some
children who had competed last year, so there was a mixture of nerves and excitement. When the
start shouted ‘GO’, the children headed off onto the 2.5km course, consisting of 3 sea swims and 4
runs.
Our team performed superbly, with many of our athletes finishing in the top 25. Joe Edwards
tackled the course with determination and was first over the line! Jenna came in 2nd, defending
her title as fastest girl, which she won last year.
I am so proud of the team who endured rough crossings in both directions, a challenging course
and awful conditions to return successful, proud and a credit to our school. A huge thank you to
Miss Wright for giving up her time to make the event possible and to all the parents who came
along and supported our team.

Ethical...
Environmental Campaigners
Whilst the Government and major corporations stall on making actual change towards reducing
pollution and halting climate change, we have a number of children in school who are incredibly
self-motivated and are taking action themselves.
The Environment Council is a group of Y5
boys who want to support the charities that are
protecting our environment. They have elected
leaders and allocated positions such as advertising
etc Their first fundraising effort will be a
jumble sale on Wednesday 19th June at 2:30pm
and the proceeds will be donated to Surfers
Against Sewage. If you have any items that
are no longer wanted, please send them in to
school and they can be passed to our Y5s who
will sort and sell them.
Bin Force is a group of Y4 children who are
passionate about reducing plastic waste and
increasing recycling. To this end, they have
identified that an increased number of recycling
bins would help support this in school. They
have calculated that they need approximately
£105 to buy the bins they need and have recently
run a cake stall to raise funds. Some of them
have even donated their own money to the
cause and their efforts so far have seen them
raise around £75.
We are very proud of both groups and they are
setting an example to us all.

Broad and Balanced Curriculum...
Y5 Cornwall Topic
As a part of Year 5’s Cornwall topic, they researched
different merchandise which supports
tourism within our county. After researching
and designing, they created their own Cornish
bags which involved a print of their design
and using fabric paints and different sewing
patterns to decorate their bags. They were very
happy with how they turned out and are excited
to use their bags over the summer
Gardening Club:
Over the last few weeks, we have been lucky
enough to be joined by some volunteers from
Heather Lane Nursery. They have been so
generous and have provided us with so many
different vegetables which are now planted in
a freshly cleared bed. We have also got a herb
garden underway. Hopefully, we will soon be
able to start supplying the kitchen with some
lovely, fresh vegetables and herbs. Well done
to all of our keen gardeners, our volunteers
were so impressed with their hard work and
dedication.
Class 2 have finished their
African masks. We think
they look very impressive!

I recently attending a meeting regarding the safety of the crossroads and the area around it,
including the school entrance, associated parking and the route of quarry lorries. Present at the
meeting were Derek Thomas MP and representatives from Highways England, Cormac and the
Parish Council. The meeting was productive and the plan is to hold and a similar meeting in the
near future where local residents and the school community are invited to share their concerns
and suggest improvements. When a date is confirmed, I will pass it on and I strongly urge you to
attend and let your voice be heard.
Congratulations to Mrs Patrick and her
partner Tom who
recently welcomed their second child. Oscar
Donald Thomas
Patrick was born on the 25th May and both
baby and mum are
doing well.
On the 12th July from 1:30-3pm, we will be holding a Careers Fair for KS2, particularly Y6. The
aim of this session will be to raise awareness of the huge range of jobs that are available to young
people when they leave education. We are dedicated to preparing our children for their lives outside
of school and this event will be the first of its kind that we have held. If you are available to
support this event by explaining your job role, talking to children about it, showing some equipment
or sharing some stories, we would really appreciate it. If you can attend, please contact me
on a.anderson@ludgvan.cornwall.sch.uk. All careers and job roles welcomed. Thank you
Please be aware that if your child wears a dress or skirt to school and enjoys doing gymnastics at
playtime and lunchtime, it is fine if they wish to wear shorts underneath.
Please ensure you state in your child’s diary where children are going after school. We have had
the odd incident where children who usually walk on their own to the community centre have
not been collected because they forgot or were unaware that they should have been attending a
club. Staff are following the correct procedure, but this can leave to some distress for children and
parents. Thank you.
