Cross-Global Collaborations Among Prosecutors and Policy Leaders

Fair and Just Prosecution (FJP), a nonprofit organization that brings together newly-elected U.S. prosecutors who are committed to innovation and reform, is convening a business meeting on Sunday, October 20th in conjunction with LEPH2019. The session will bring together reform-minded prosecutors from across the globe — along with policy leaders from the harm reduction, public health and human rights arenas — to discuss opportunities, innovations and challenges in integrating a public health lens into criminal justice and drug policy reforms.

Topics will likely include:

  • the role that prosecutors can play in replacing overly punitive drug strategies with harm reduction approaches—including advancing safe consumption sites, naloxone access, Good Samaritan laws, and nonpunitive responses to drug use; and
  • ways to propel a public health response to violence reduction and promote alternative pathways for health and mental health challenges that often end up in the criminal justice system.

The goal of this meeting is to establish a network of global prosecutors and policy leaders who share a common vision and can work together to advance reform, improve information sharing, and forge collaborations on a global scale on an ongoing basis.
