Back to brown, it is. Kim Kardashian West recently returned to her signature brunette hue, proving that classics never go out of style.

Since last summer, we’ve seen the beauty boss constantly switch up the color of her hair — from blonde to baby blue (for a brief moment) and then blonde again. Less than a month ago, she debuted perhaps the most shocking color of all: bubblegum pink.

To keep up with Kardashian West’s hair game, we chatted with her go-to colorist Chris Appleton who’s also an ambassador for Olaplex and Color Wow. “I loved the blonde. We had so much fun with it and did so many different shades and lengths. Kim gave looks,” Appleton tells Allure. “It felt like the right time to bring back the brown hair. It’s so chic and looks amazing on her.”

To get the reality TV star’s hair back to the dark side, Appleton used red copper and gold pigments before adding in brown. “This stops the hair from going green and gives you a true, rich natural brown color,” he says. The color-correcting process — which took a total of three hours — was done with Redken Shades EQ Equalizing Conditioning Color Gloss, which has zero ammonia and is super gentle.

“When I color the hair, I always use a very slow process and to keep the integrity,” says Appleton, who recommends Olaplex bond multiplier. He also suggests Color Wow’s Color Security Shampoo, a sulfate-free formula packed with conditioning agents and Pop & Lock High Shine Shellac, which does the job of penetrating hair to restore moisture.

As with any dramatic color change, it’s vital to keep maintenance in check. “The small things make a big difference like turning down the heat on your styling appliances and hair dryer,” adds Appleton.

Although it’s pretty clear via a previous tweet that Kardashian West is not missing her blonde hair, Appleton believes the light hue will be a lasting trend. “I think this summer, people are still going to go with platinum blonde,” he says. “It will be icy cool and I think embracing your roots is super in fashion right now. Also, gentle peaches are going to be a big hit.”

And if you’re really into planning ahead, consider Appleton’s take: “Going into fall, we’re going to see a big return of vibrant red and coppers.”
