Skyless Aeons – Drain The Sun

Label: Self-Release
Releasedate: 02.10.2020

Skyless Aeons are a Canadian band releasing their first album, Drain The Sun. Hailing from London, Ontário, the title of the album fits perfectly for an early October release, because it’s getting darker and darker in the northern hemisphere. If you are into black, doom, death, a bit of everything, these guys are for you. Don’t let yourself be discouraged, because the album grows on you.

I found the first track, “Ascension Towards Nothing”, a pretty standard first track. With a crescendo and mix of sounds that resemble Porcupine Tree at times, but is clearly far away from them. The base sound is definitely clear, which I like, but I understand that might be a bit pronounced. It’s an instrumental song for the majority until the growling appears at the end.

Continuing the album, the second and third track integrate into each other pretty steadily, and there is a somewhat sonority that reminds me of ’90s alternative bands. The mixture of sounds is well advertised but if I would be them, I would stop growling, because it doesn’t suit that much. Instrumentally, the band is there. Some guitar transitions could be more polished but they are solid and are not afraid to experiment.

The fact is that this Skyless Aeons album becomes finally very good at the end. “Age of Regression” has incredible guitar moments. “Path of Desolation” is an amazing track with a very cool sound structure from beginning to end and might be my favorite track because has no vocals in it. “Drain the Sun” is the last song. I finally have the feeling that I want to hear the album again.

My conclusion is that this release is well done. The only thing that didn’t sit well was the growling, but that can change. If Opeth did it, I guess these guys should try it too. I would definitely see them opening for them at some point.
