Mozambique wants to strengthen cooperation with Russia, with defence and security a priority, the Mozambican Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation said yesterday.
“The purpose [of the Mozambican president’s visit to Russia] is to reinforce the existing – and historic – relations, and we also want to look into the cooperation in all sectors, especially in the area of defence and security,” said Maria Lucas, cited by Television of Mozambique (TVM).
The Mozambican Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation was speaking in Moscow during a working visit by Mozambican head of state Filipe Nyusi to Russia, at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, which began on Tuesday.
In addition to cooperation in defence and security, Lucas highlighted the desire to boost trade relations between the two states.
“They [the Russians] are opening up to the African market and I am absolutely sure that Mozambique is a potential partner,” the Deputy Minister added, stressing the importance of the Mozambique-Russia Business Forum taking place on Wednesday.
Maria Lucas further said that Mozambique was also interested in cooperating with Russia in the gas and oil sector, taking into account Moscow’s experience as one of the world’s largest producers.
“A lot is expected [from the industry], and that is why we have many big Russian companies organising big events and holding meetings with the head of state,” he added.
The visit, which ends on Friday, also includes official talks between Filipe Nyusi and Vladimir Putin, as well as meetings with the Mozambican community in Russia.
Accompanying the Mozambican head of state are Minister of Defence Atanásio Mtumuke, Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Max Tonela, Deputy Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Maria Lucas, and of Science and Technology, Higher and Vocational Education, Leda Hugo.
