Music Network announces free online professional development course for musicians
Music Network presents Taking Charge of your Performance Career 2020: Performing Online, a series of five free interactive web seminars for professional musicians, 10th–16th December.

With four webinars and one panel discussion, this free professional development course aims to help musicians develop important skills for showcasing their work online. This is the second instalment of Music Network’s Taking Charge of your Performance Career series this year, and follows on from 8 seminars which took place in April and May. This training is just one of a number of ways in which Music Network has supported musicians during 2020.

Delivered by international industry professionals, the course will offer relevant and up-to-date advice in the areas of planning online performances, optimising your audio and video output, choosing the right platform, and extending your online practice. Each online session will comprise a 60 minute presentation followed by Q&A with participants. Registration is essential to participate in the sessions.

Commenting on the announcement, CEO of Music Network Sharon Rollston said: “We are delighted to announce Music Network’s online training and development course, Taking Charge of your Performance Career: Performing Online, will take place from 10th–16th December. This series carries on from our Taking Charge of your Performance Career training sessions which took place online back in April and May and proved very popular with musicians.

“This year, like no other, artists have had to adapt quickly to the world of online performance. Hosted by international industry professionals, this new course aims to help musicians to develop key skills for continuing to showcase their work online. As previously, the course is free and available to musicians working in any genre and we hope many will benefit from the presentations.”

Speaking live from New York, music industry writer and entrepreneur Lisa Occhino will present the opening talk of the series on Thursday 10th December at 2pm. Performing Online: An Overview will offer practical advice to enable musicians to make strategic decisions around their digital output. Dublin-based sound engineer Mairéad O’Reilly will cover essential elements of the audio recording process for online performances in Optimising Your Audio on Friday 11th December at 2pm.

Speaking from his studio in Shropshire, UK, jazz musician and audio visual producer Simon Peter King will offer practical advice and demonstrations on Optimising Your Video on Monday 14 December at 11am. Leading British arts entrepreneur and marketing consultant David Taylor will offer a detailed guide to the many platform choices available to musicians wishing to stream their performances online with Choosing Your Platform on Tuesday 15th December at 11am.

The final session of the series will be an interactive panel presentation featuring three well-known performers, Liz Doherty, Xenia Pestova Bennett and Gwendolyn Masin, who have successfully used the online medium to extend their musical practice. Extending Your Practice Online aims to encourage new and creative ways of thinking about how musicians can enhance and develop their existing musical practice online. This session will take place on Wednesday 16th December at 11am.

The presentations will be made available to view on Music Network’s YouTube channel in 2021.
