Introduction to Subtitling


Learn what sets subtitling apart in the translation industry, both in terms of the technical knowledge required to make subtitles work and the language skills needed to make subtitles attractive for an audience in the target language. Learn about time coding, character limitation, formatting, and shot changes. Practice using two free, online platforms—DotSub and YouTube Creator—and learn to apply your subtitling skills to different environments to address the needs of clients in the entertainment and audiovisual industry.

CLASS DETAILS
 
Where?
This class is taught completely online, within the UC San Diego system, which uses Canvas as a learning and teaching interface.

How Long?
This class lasts six weeks and students can log in and study in their on time, at their own place, as long as homework delivery dates are met.

When?
This session starts April 7 and ends May 18. Weekly homework items are due every Sunday.


How Much?
This class costs a one-time fee of $300 USD.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

RAFA LOMBARDINO ― A native Brazilian working as a professional translator since 1997. She is certified in English-to-Portuguese and Portuguese-to-English by the American Translators Association (ATA) and has a Professional Certificate in Spanish-to-English Translations from the University of California San Diego Extension. She has been teaching translation since 2010 and is the author of "Tools and Technology in Translation," a book based on her 10-week online class and YouTube channel.
