Innovative Hep C Initiatives Are Waiting to Be Replicated

San Francisco's End Hep C initiative has done a lot of work with addiction treatment programs. With newer medications to treat hep C, it is very possible for a person to be cured of hepatitis while they are receiving addiction treatment. Co-locating these services just makes sense.

"Curing people of HCV at drug treatment programs is a win-win—oftentimes people are so empowered by having been cured that it provides an extra boost to support their recovery," said initiative leader Katie Burk.

Pa. Prisons to Extend Medication-Assisted Treatment to Incoming Inmates

Starting June 1, incoming inmates who have been prescribed injectable naltrexone (brand name Vivitrol) and the buprenorphine/naloxone combination (brand name Suboxone) will be allowed to continue their medication in prison. Methadone treatment will be made available in state prisons at a later date. This is good news, and the next step is to create these sorts of policies in county jails throughout PA.

EHR Prompts Increase Take‐Home Naloxone for Patients in the ED

This research article describes the success of Pittsburgh-based program that created automatic prompts within the EHR for overdose survivors in the emergency department. Take-home naloxone prescriptions increased after the prompt was implemented, but what's also interesting is that the prompt eliminated certain patterns in take-home naloxone prescribing (e.g., certain ages and races had previously been more likely to receive take-home naloxone than others).
