WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A Hampstead man is heading to prison after being found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in a 2015 fatal shooting in Pender County.

Dennis Westberg was sentenced to 12-24 months in prison and was ordered to pay $1,377 in court costs Thursday.

Westberg was charged in the fatal shooting of Larry Joshua Goodson in a home in the 400 block of Moores Landing Road on July 26, 2015.

At the time of the shooting, Westberg had been working as a paramedic for New Hanover Regional Medical Center since 2004.

Officers responded to the home after receiving a 911 call from Westberg shortly after 6 a.m.

According to the 911 calls, Westberg lived in the home and shot the victim after he allegedly was threatening him.

"What was he threatening you about sir?" asked the Pender County dispatcher.

"He was threatening me about a long life history of his a being on probation and his just wanting not to go back there," Westberg said.

Westberg said the victim did not threaten him with any weapons, but he only pulled the trigger after the victim allegedly "came at him."

Dispatchers told Westberg to go outside and to wait for deputies to arrive.

When officers arrived at the scene, Westberg was outside of the home and was taken into custody.

Goodson was found dead inside the home.
