It’s Interesting, Isn’t It? This Thing Called Time

It is said that time marches on.

It’s also said that time heals all wounds. I’m still working on that one, but I can honestly say time softens the impact of the wounds, or perhaps it softens my response to the wounds so that I can find purpose and new-found wisdom and comfort to help others because of the wounds.

It’s interesting, isn’t it?

This thing called time.

It ebbs and flows with tumultuous waves and then lies still. Calm. Reflecting the light of God’s glory. Time is contained within the hands of the One who created all things — the One who has no beginning and end.

And yet our lives are defined by this thing called time. It marks every breath.

As does our Father.

I have battled anxiety and worry for years, but I’m beginning to experience a gradual shift to finding peace in my most anxious moments. Why? Because I’ve come to know the Lord as the Sovereign God — the One who orchestrates our days with full authority and knowledge.

I have known and loved Jesus for decades, but a painful season of brokenness and desperate situations has caused me to pause and understand the very essence of who God is.

He is magnificent in all His ways. Mighty in power. Tender in love. He is my Jehovah-jireh: the Lord my Provider. He is Jehovah-raphah: the Lord my Healer.

He told the oceans how far to come.

He hung the stars and moon in place.

And before the mountains were brought forth He had formed the earth from everlasting to everlasting, for He is God.

Always God.

Always sovereign.

I find rest in that knowledge because I have learned that nothing takes Him by surprise. I’ve learned that He really does go before us — He arrives in the difficult places and awaits to bathe us in His grace and lift us high above the fray — if only we will run to Him.

I find rest in the knowledge of His sovereignty because I’ve learned that if He allows something into my life, I can fully trust Him — even when I don’t understand.

Even when I don’t like it.

Charles Spurgeon once said, “God is too good to be unkind. He is too wise to make a mistake. And when we cannot trace His hand, we have to trust His heart.”

We can always trust His heart, for it is turned toward us, His children, as He pursues us with His love. Our names are engraved on the palm of His hands.

Yes, our God is good.

Knowing that all the days of my life are held in His hand — each one filled with His purposes and plans, each one drawing me closer to Him … well, that is a sweet revelation.

My prayer is that you, too, will walk in this knowledge and find His perfect peace.

“But as for me, I trust in You, O Lord. I say, ‘You are my God.’ My times are in Your hand.” ~ Psalm 31:14-15
