Stay In The Know With Mayweather Promotions

2018 was a very rewarding year for Mayweather Promotions, as we promoted 11 boxing events, added talent to our stable, created opportunities for our up-and-coming fighters to build upon their careers, put fighters in the spotlight globally with events in Canada and Russia, while focusing on expanding the company’s reach through continuing to promote successful fan friendly events. We’re looking forward to an even more prosperous 2019 and thank all of our fans that have joined us on our journey as the PAST.PRESENT.FUTURE of sports and entertainment!

Former five-time boxing champion, Ava Knight (17-2-4, 5 KO’s), makes her long-awaited return to the ring under the Mayweather Promotions banner on September 22nd on the Borrego vs. Krael undercard!

Northern California native and former 2-time world champion, Ava “The Lady of Boxing” Knight made her move from the Bay Area to Las Vegas in 2014 in hopes of catching the attention of promoters for women’s boxing. Since then, she has been training at the Mayweather Boxing Club. During her two-year hiatus from her boxing career, Knight dedicated her time to train other fighters, like celebrity Joe Jonas, and to travel. After taking that time off, she picked up her training and began perfecting her craft to stay ready for the next big move. She got her break and signed with Mayweather Promotions in January of 2018.

Ava made her Mayweather Promotions’ debut on September 22, 2018 where she defeated Nancy Franco by unanimous decision in a 6-round battle at Sam’s Town Live in Las Vegas, home of Mayweather Promotions Sin City Showdown cards. She was back in the ring soon after on December 7, 2018 to face Mexico’s tough Mayela Perez and earned another unanimous decision victory to close out the year. Knight not only looks to make a mark for women in the boxing industry, but those women fighters, such as herself, who didn’t have the opportunity to compete in the Olympics that are being overlooked. Stay tuned for more of The Lady of Boxing in 2019!

Two-time world champion, Badou Jack, taking advantage of his star power to build upon his legacy and community involvement outside of the ropes

Swedish born boxer and Las Vegas resident established the Badou Jack Foundation in 2018 with the mission of helping young lives torn by war that began in his father’s west African homeland, Gambia, and has now extended into Jordan. The work began before his bout in May of 2018 and has now taken him across the Middle East. The first task was to supply the people with nutrition shakes, feed the youth and then the expansion will begin. Jack has the plan to “expand all over the world no matter what religion, and no matter what culture. South American, Africa, Asia, Middle East- anywhere,” said Jack. Through his foundation he has done commendable philanthropic work that he looks to continue into 2019 and has made it his mission to help give as many children as possible around the world “a fighting chance.”

In April of 2018, Jack also made headlines with the launch of his new nutritional supplement line, “Ripper Nutrition.” “This is a dream come true for me,” said Jack. “I have wanted to start my own nutrition line for a while now, but I only wanted to do it if I knew it was going to be clean and safe.”

Both fighters began the bout feeling each other out in the early rounds, waiting for the perfect opportunity to throw well-timed punches.  They picked up the momentum and began exchanging combinations in the 3rd round and continued to pick up the pace throughout the bout.  Miller began to close the distance and lure Garcia into an all-out brawl in the final rounds. The judges scored the bout a majority decision in favor of Ladarius “Memphis” Miller. Former WBC Super Middleweight contender, Ronald “The Thrill” Gavril (19-3, 15 KO’s), was in the co-main event vs. New Jersey native Antowyan Aikens (12-6-1, 1 KO) in a Super Middleweight battle. Las Vegas fan favorite, Cameron “Suave” Krael got the victory in a 10-round welterweight showdown against Kenya’s Michael “Hurricane” Odhiambo, live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. In the co-main event, “Amazing” Layla McCarter scored a unanimous decision victory over Argentina’s Yamila “La Maquinita” Reynoso.

After only 2:03 into round 1, Cameron “Suave” Krael (15-13-3, 4KOs) defeated Michael “Hurricane” Odhiambo (15-11, 12KOs) after having knocked him down 3 times. Both fighters started off feeling one another out. McCarter began to loosen up and get more comfortable going into the 2nd round, as she began to let her jab go in front of her hometown crowd who frequently cheered her on.  Reynoso seemed focused on her game plan. The third round saw more action from Reynoso, as she kept a quick pace and walked forward to her opponent to connect head and body shots. In the coming rounds, McCarter came out swinging and continued to keep up with the fast pace of her opponent. In the late rounds, a more aggressive McCarter showed up and posed frustration for her opponent. After 10 action-packed rounds, the judges scored the bout a unanimous decision in favor of Layla McCarter.

Additional action saw undefeated former Olympian from Brooklyn, NY, Richardson Hitchins (7-0, 3KOs) make his Las Vegas debut against Pennsylvania’s Tre’Sean “Trigger” Wiggins (10-4-1, 6 KOs). Undefeated super featherweight, Andres “Savage” Cortes (10-0, 6KOs) went toe-to-toe with Mexico’s Eder “Koriano” Fajardo (9-7, 4KOs) and worked his way to a TKO victory after Fajardo’s corner put a halt to the bout. SOMETIMES A GETAWAY IS ALL YOU NEED

“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” -St. Augustine

Almafi, Italy

It’s hard to imagine a more beautiful destination than Italy’s Amalfi Coast. Winding roads and steep cliffs flank the stunning shoreline in Italy’s Campania region, providing the perfect backdrop for romance despite the chillier winter temps. Positano, known for its brightly colored architecture, is considered the region’s must-visit spot.

St. Martin – St. Maarten

The half-Dutch, half-French island of St. Martin – St. Maarten offers couples plenty of culture as well as a hearty mix of adventure and leisure activities. Couples can head to the world-famous (and clothing-optional) Orient Bay on the French side of the island for beach bars, spectacular dining and plenty of sun.

Maldives

The Republic of Maldives is made up of 26 natural atolls, which are surrounded by a striking turquoise lagoon. Due to its far-flung location, this winter vacation spot is pretty pricey to visit. However, the romantic atmosphere is unmatched thanks to its seclusion, crystal clear waters and spectacular sunrises and sunsets.

Tuscany, Italy

Winter is one of Italy’s best kept secrets, but that is especially true in the region of Tuscany. Here, couples can explore the rolling hills, tiny medieval towns and local wineries that turn grapes into award-winning concoctions with far fewer crowds to contend with. Consider a stay at the Renaissance Tuscany Il Ciocco Resort & Spa to enjoy sweeping views of the countryside, spa treatments and chef-led cooking lessons.

Chicago, Illinois

If you want to set the tone for romance in the Midwest, Chicago is the perfect destination to explore. Visit the German-inspired Christkindlmarket at Daley Plaza and stay at The Ritz-Carlton, Chicago to take advantage of its luxurious spa (complete with couples treatments), close proximity to the famous Magnificent Mile and dining at the refined Torali Italian restaurant.

Napa Valley, California

Wine and romance often go hand-in-hand, which is why California’s Napa Valley is ideal for a winter retreat. Couples can visit one of the many Michelin-starred restaurants in the area, including La Toque, which boasts more than 2,000 bottles of wine. Another option: Purchase a Taste Napa Downtown card, which allows you to sample wines for half-price at various tasting rooms within walking distance of one another. Or, take a ride on the Napa Valley Wine Train.

Kauai, Hawaii

From the cliff-lined North Shore to the Coconut Coast, Kauai is an island with unparalleled beauty and privacy. Couples visiting this unspoiled paradise can book a stay in a luxury resort for fine dining, spa treatments and beautiful ocean views from the comfort of their rooms. Don’t forget to attend a luau for an authentic Hawaiian experience. And for a real treat, book a helicopter tour of the incredible Napali Coast.

St. Moritz, Switzerland

St. Moritz may be most known as a top ski destination, but it’s also perfect for couples seeking romance. This mountain town features its own mineral springs, which have been attracting tourists for 3,000 years. Duos can enjoy days soaking in the area’s famous spas, in addition to winter activities like skiing and snowboarding. When it’s time for a bite, head to one of the numerous high-end dining establishments that line the stunning Lake St. Moritz.

Featured Fighter: Angelo Leo

Albuquerque native, Angelo “El Chinito” Leo, is proving that he is a force to be reckoned with inside the ring with his current record of 14-0, 8 KO’s. We decided to catch up with the up-and-coming prospect to learn about his accomplishments, future goals, and life beyond the ring.

Was it a difficult decision for you and your father to make to move from your hometown of Albuquerque to Las Vegas, the fight capital of the world?

No, not at all. My dad and me already had this planned out to move here since 2016. It was not a difficult decision at all, we had a plan and we knew we’d be signing a contract with Mayweather Promotions.

Your first fight as a MP fighter resulted in a 4th round TKO over Basilio Nieves. Describe how you felt preparing for that fight –was there more pressure on you to be victorious? And how did you feel after defeating your opponent?

I fought really well that night. I knew I had to showcase my talent, skills, and impress everyone. And that’s exactly what I did. I felt a little pressure but at the same time I k new that’s what I worked so hard for and I had to give a good performance.

Name 1 or more advantages and at least 1 disadvantage for having your father as your trainer.

He knows me really well—my strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes I see him as my father while we’re training and I should see him as a trainer so that’ll be the only disadvantage is that we get into arguments but at the end of the day he knows me, I know him and it all works out.

If you could change 1 thing about the sport of boxing, what would you change? Why would you change it?

It’d be to simplify the championship belts instead of having junior and youth belts. It causes confusion.

Who is your biggest boxing inspiration? What did they teach you to do better as a fighter?

I’d have to say Floyd Mayweather. His work ethic and everything he does in and out the ring  shows in his performance.

Las Vegas is a city very well known for its hotels, casinos, and attractions. Living in the City of Sin, how do you stay focused and prepared for each fight?

I stay focused because I have a set goal and I take in a lot of advice and I stay focused and don’t mind the other stuff.

Who are your favorite artists at the moment?

I’d have to say Tupac and 6ix9ine he’s cool he stands out and speaks his mind and doesn’t care.

What are your go-to spots to eat at in Albuquerque and in Las Vegas? Which one is the best out of the 2?

Dion’s pizza is a really good franchise in Albuquerque, they’re really good! There’s too many to name in Vegas but I do like Canes. I’d have to go with Dion’s being the best.

Outside of your hometown, what’s the best city (or cities) you’ve traveled to?

Los Angeles, I love the big city there’s a lot to do and of course Las Vegas. I’d like to go to Miami and New York.

What’s a saying or quote that you live by?

Persistence breaks resistance. To me, that means to be tenacious in whatever you do to reach your goal.

Featured Staff: Krissy Engram

What was once a dream, became a reality for Delaware native, Krissy Engram, when she joined the Mayweather Promotions team in 2017. She always carried a passion for the sport from growing up watching the champ, Floyd Mayweather, to attending local boxing events. Her transition from a science career field to the boxing industry was smooth sailing and she has proven to be a valuable asset to the team. We sat down with Krissy to learn more about her passion for the sweet science, how she balances career and family, and words of advice for those looking to pursue a similar career path.

Where do you currently reside and how do you manage to maintain your career and workload?

I currently reside in Dover, Delaware. Things are easy for me to balance because I am good at managing my time.  I schedule out what my priorities and daily tasks are and schedule in enough time for me on a daily basis to get things done. I also revise my schedule and my time for each task as needed.

How did you get started with Mayweather Promotions and what is your current role with the company?

I ended up sitting in the corral next to the CEO, Leonard Ellerbe, and Vice President of Marketing and Operations, Nicole Craig, at the Broner vs. Theophane fight on April 1, 2016. At that time, I was already working in the field, but I was with a different promoter. I just got the nerve to get up and ask Leonard if they would at some time be opening an office in the east coast. Leonard was surprised by my fearlessness in asking if anything was coming on the horizon and he actually introduced me to Nicole and had her give me her card. From there I reached out to her via email and I was asked to come on board as a volunteer for Jack vs. Bute that same month. I kept in touch with her from there and anytime she needed any volunteer work from me I would offer my services. The next fight I helped out with was Jack vs. Degale in January of 2017 and after spending that week with the team I was eventually asked to come on board on a more regular basis and I’ve been working with Mayweather Promotions ever since.

My current role at the company includes various areas:

  • Conducting research on fighters for upcoming events and various other topics as needed.
  • Creating social media plans, as well as running social media accounts for live posting during fight/event weeks.
  • Working closely with the team on our quarterly MP and TFMJF newsletters from executing the drafts of sections to distribution duties.
  • A lot of my time is spent in New York with our east coast fighters. I work as a liaison between them and Mayweather Promotions, making sure they have everything they need in preparation for fight night, as well as documenting their fight week on our social accounts.
  • MP and TFMJF event planning and execution in any capacity that I am available to help with from afar.
  • I am also being trained on operational duties and responsibilities, as this is an area that I am interested in and feel that I can add value to the team.

What makes you proud to be part of the Mayweather Promotions team?

The proudest thing for me is that this is actually something that I envisioned for myself years ago. I have been a big fan of boxing for so long, and Floyd Mayweather has been one of my favorite fighters that I spent a lot of time watching growing up and even had made attempts to come to Las Vegas to actually see him fight live. I always knew that I would want to be with the best promotional company in the industry and to now have become part of the past, present, and future of sports & entertainment. I feel that there is no higher accomplishment for me than that. It is a goal that I have had, and I am happy that I have been able to achieve it.

What do you find to be the biggest challenge trying to balance your career and family?

The biggest challenge in general is learning how to make time for both work to be completed, as well as quality time with my family. I wouldn’t consider myself a workaholic, however I really try my hardest to stay organized, meet my goals, and stay on top of any tasks and priorities. Sometimes I do have a habit of spending a little more time working during the times that I should be spending with my family. One of the things I’ve learned to do is to alter my schedule. I wake up earlier to allow time to myself before my day starts to move and therefore I’m pretty settled and can switch gears when my husband and children get home. My family understands that not only is it work, but I love what I do, and they are 100% supportive of my goals and what I do on an everyday basis.

What has been your most memorable or impactful experience since joining the Mayweather Promotions team?

I would have to say Mayweather vs. McGregor because I think as far as my career goals, when you’ve reached a goal of actually not only a sport and fighter you love all in a work experience, nothing can get any better than that. I love this sport and got to experience one of the biggest fights in combat sports history, as well as my favorite fighter in action. I was also part of the team that put it all together. From the planning to seeing it all come together is an experience that I will never forget.

What words of advice would you share with someone attempting to travel the same career path?

I honestly did not start out in boxing, I have a scientific background, I am a DNA analyst and have multiple science degrees. I’ve changed paths and I know it was the best decision for me. Especially after assuming that you’ve established this perfect career for yourself, but the key to keep in mind is to always make sure you are doing what you are most passionate about and doing what you love because if you don’t love what you do and aren’t passionate about it, it isn’t really worth it. That is one thing I love about working in boxing is that I enjoy it. I have those moments where it can be frustrating or overwhelming, however I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Make sure it is the exact career path that you want and are passionate about, research the field, get to know who is involved, who you can potentially reach out to or meet in person, and never give up on your vision or your dream regardless of how old you are or how experienced you think you are at something else.

Tell us one fun fact about yourself that most people wouldn’t know.

People who don’t know me very well would have no clue that I was a police officer. I did it for about a year and a half. When I first decided to be a forensic scientist I had the interest of being a detective as well. I liked the idea of doing the investigating, but also offering the scientific approach as well. I chose not to continue with the police force because of the amount of time it would take to become a detective.

                  Amanda DeSousa

Amanda is a Probation/Parole Officer in New Hampshire who never could’ve imagined having an interest in boxing. Boxing has made Amanda realize that life is worth fighting for! Amanda attends a martial arts academy in her spare time, where she trains and has used boxing as a means of mental and physical strength. When life throws a blow, Amanda looks to the physical and mental toughness of her favorite fighter, Gervonta Davis. Read below to understand how Amanda became drawn to Gervonta over the past year.

Tell us how you first got introduced to Gervonta Davis and how long have you been a fan.

I was first introduced to Gervonta Davis by my boxing coaches when I started my own boxing journey. I’ve been a fan for 1 year.

Which was your favorite Gervonta fight, and why?

My favorite Gervonta fight was his 3rdround TKO win over Jesus Cuellar. In that moment, Gervonta became a 2X World Champion.  You could tell by Gervonta’s demeanor that he was hungry for it all and winning his second belt was a major accomplishment.

In what ways do you or have you supported Gervonta?

I support Gervonta by watching all of his fights and analyzing his boxing techniques, so I can learn to apply them when I’m in the ring.

What is it about Gervonta that you like?

Like Gervonta, I am of a smaller stature and size in the ring. Often my sparring partners are taller, weigh more, and have a longer reach. This is a challenge that Gervonta has had to deal with and has mastered. Combine his boxing IQ and technique with hand speed, and Gervonta Davis has become a tremendous fighter. Gervonta is also mentally strong and gives me a boost of confidence whenever I’m feeling discouraged.

Finish this sentence: I am the best Gervonta Davis fan because…

I support Gervonta in any way I can because he motivates me by making me feel like anything is possible in the ring.

In your opinion, how has Gervonta positively impacted the sport of boxing?

Gervonta is young, talented, and refuses to be defeated. This is the motto of most young boxers, so not only can we relate, but we are also motivated by how much he’s accomplished in a short time period. We look to excel in the sport the same way he has.

What accomplishments and future successes do you see for Gervonta?

Gervonta Davis is a star. I see him going far in boxing by shedding light on the smaller weight classes and opening the door for larger audiences to really see that smaller fighters pack a punch just like the heavyweights and are also entertaining.

If you could meet Gervonta Davis, what would you ask him or her?

I would ask Gervonta if he any advice for a small fighter with big dreams.

                                    Genaro Doria

Genaro Doria of Sacramento, California is a husband and father of 3 who works as a Civil Engineer by day and enjoys various aspects of the sport of boxing in his spare time. As a youngster, Genaro was introduced to boxing through the Sacramento PAL program and believes the program helped shape his adulthood. Genaro considers himself a jack of all trades; he’s a member of USA Boxing, and loves to coach, referee, judge, and treat cuts in a boxer’s corner. For the past 6 years he’s been donating his time to help kids in the community stay disciplined and in shape through boxing. It is through this capacity that Genaro’s interest in Xavier Martinez was sparked. Read on to learn about how these two men from Sacramento met and the continued impact that Xavier has on the life of his #1 fan.

Tell us how you first got introduced to Xavier Martinez and how long have you been a fan.

I first met Xavier in 2014 at the California Golden Gloves State Championship.  I’ve known his coach Ray Woods for quite some time and he suggested that I attend the championships to watch Xavier fight. I was immediately drawn to Xavier’s style of boxing and his explosiveness in the ring.  Ray later introduced Xavier and I to each other; it was hard not to notice his humble, yet confident demeanor.  I have been a fan of Xavier since.

Which was your favorite Xavier fight, and why?

My favorite fight of Xavier goes back to his amateur boxing days. The 2014 California Golden Gloves State Championship was the first fight I ever saw of him. Xavier was explosive, threw perfect combinations, and didn’t hold back any punches. His commitment to the sport showed. Although he didn’t get the decision, his eyes were full of determination to move forward and succeed. I personally believe he won that fight.

In what ways do you or have you supported Xavier?

I follow Xavier on Instagram and encourage him to press forward, while also reminding him that he will be a future champ.  I also help to support Xavier during his training camps; boxers that I train spar with him regularly to help him prepare for his fights.

What is it about Xavier that you like?

I like Xavier because he is down to earth and treats people with respect.  He’s a respectful young man who lives by the saying, “Treat people how you want to be treated.”

Finish this sentence: I am the best Xavier Martinez fan because…

I am the best Xavier Martinez fan because I believe in him and his ability to be the next exciting, explosive, and entertaining TMT Mayweather Promotions Champion! Xavier has tunnel vision and is climbing the ladder carefully by the aid of his team.  I don’t see Xavier being a short-term champion, but he’s in it to be a long-term champion. True fans are supportive, and I fit that mold.

In your opinion, how has Xavier positively impacted the sport of boxing?

Xavier is another prime example that hard work and dedication can and will make your dreams come true.  He’s experienced many hardships but never gave up on his dreams and is now Xavier can enjoy the limelight.

What accomplishments and future successes do you see for Xavier?

I see Xavier being TMT’s top prospect in the sport and a reigning champion for many years to come.  It would also be awesome to see Xavier headline a championship fight in Sacramento, California in front of his hometown fans.

What is one thing you would ask Xavier that you don’t already know?

Next time I see him I would ask him about his favorite cheat meal.

                       Lisa Cacho

Lisa lives in Oceanside, California where she’s invested the last 20 years of her life as a stay-at-home mom of two daughters, who are now a sophomore and senior in college. She is looking forward to beginning a yearlong internship and is eager to re-enter the work force where she looks forward to empowering people to live a life of action and abundance. Meanwhile, Lisa also enjoys spending time with friends and family, traveling, photography, and boxing. For as long as she can remember, boxing has been a part of her life, so it only makes sense that Floyd Mayweather is her favorite fighter. Lisa’s love of Floyd dates back to his amateur days; read on for Lisa’s expressions  on why she’s a big fan of TBE!

Tell us how you first got introduced to Floyd Mayweather and how long have you been a fan.

My dad has always had a love for boxing so naturally I would hear about most boxers through him. It was during the controversial decision of the 1996 Olympics that I was introduced to a young but determined Floyd Mayweather. His heart and love for the sport despite the blatant corruption he experienced made him easy to root for. His determination to succeed after the upsetting decision made him a clear winner in my book.

Which was your favorite Floyd fight, and why?

Mayweather is both a skilled and an entertaining boxer, making most of his fights very enjoyable to watch. One of my favorites was his April 2006 fight against Zab Judah because it turned into a brawl, making it a bit more intense than most of his fights.

In what ways do you or have you supported Floyd?

My family has been faithful in following Mayweather through his Pay-Per-View events which, became reasons to gather with friends and family for an evening of entertainment, like we used to when I was younger. My daughters also grew up loving Mayweather and were often found hitting their punching bags with old boxing equipment from their toy bin that I gave them to practice their ‘Mayweather defense’ and shoulder rolls. Last year, my daughters and I took an overnight trip to Vegas and stopped by the Mayweather Boxing Club. Touring the gym while boxers were training, and sparring was a memory we won’t forget!

What is it about Floyd that you like?

I really love that despite his Olympic rough start (or perhaps because of it), Mayweather proved that there is no limit to what old fashioned hard work and dedication can achieve. I appreciate that he doesn’t feel the need to hide behind excuses or be validated by others, he knows his worth and value and he expects to be treated as the champ that he is. All work maybe easy work for Mayweather but it’s only because he put in a lifetime of hard work to get there. It’s also fun to see the human side of Mayweather as he trains routinely but also travels, enjoys life, loves being a dad, and isn’t afraid to enjoy the fruits of his labor.

Finish this sentence: I am the best Floyd Mayweather fan because…

I’m not your typical boxing fan. There will be people who know more stats and better understand the technicalities and psychology of the sport, but I am the best Floyd Mayweather fan because I’m loyal to him and TMT. For me, boxing is about family time and the group experience of PPV parties. To me, Mayweather is an extension of my family and will always be TBE.

In your opinion, how has Floyd positively impacted the sport of boxing?

Mayweather has had a tremendously positive impact on the sport of boxing, bringing attention and shining light in the areas where corruption has long since ruled. One of the most important aspects is how he stood up for himself against powerful people and organizations in the industry, betting on himself and ultimately becoming the ruler of his own empire.

What accomplishments and future successes do you see for Floyd?

Floyd Mayweather has made it clear that he has the Midas touch, the things he touches will succeed and when he’s involved because he works with a spirit of excellence. If he can share the same vision, mindset, and desire to succeed with his staff and fighters, his gyms, investments, clothing brands, and promotions company will always thrive. Even greater than the fame he has already achieved and the money he’s made is Floyd’s ability to change the world as he gives of his time, serves, and invests in local and global communities.

If you could meet Floyd Mayweather, what would you ask him ?

I would consider it an honor to meet with Mayweather and though I’d love to ask him to start a scholarship for fans to help pay student loans, ask for a job within his organization, and pick his brain, hear his stories, and glean some wisdom in any way I can. And of course, I’d ask for a selfie for the Instagram!
