A meat-free taco recipe the whole family will love

Brought to you by Quorn. How often do you cook a family dinner without meat?

Honestly, we do eat meat most nights but I’ve been wanting to reel it back a bit, for financial and health reasons. Meat is expensive, and my husband is a meat-eating machine. The dude can eat. {Sorry Shane! It’s true though!}.

The team at Quorn asked me if I’d consider reducing the amount of meat we eat and adding in a little bit of Quorn. I love mixing things up a little, so I was definitely open to it. Quorn is a product known as Mycoprotein, which is high in protein and high in fibre, and totally vegetarian, as well as having zero cholesterol. And when you think about it, producing Mycoprotein needs less water and land… so it’s good for the environment too.

This is probably a meal that you’re familiar with in your house. TACOS. I know that we’re big fans of taco Tuesday. Huge. It’s one of those meals that everyone in the family eats, and makes for very happy days {who knew dinner times would be such a juggle?}. So I was worried about mixing it up by swapping mince for Quorn, but took the challenge anyway.

I picked up Quorn Mince from my local Woolworths {it was actually on sale for $5.50} and got cooking back at home. Quorn Mince has no artificial flavours, colours or preservatives. It should be cooked from frozen, so I added a dash of oil to the pan, tossed in the Quorn Mince and then some homemade taco seasoning {1 tsp chilli powder, 1 tsp ground cumin, 1 tsp paprika, 1 tsp onion powder, 1 tsp garlic powder and a dash of cayenne pepper}. I cooked it for 10 minutes on a medium heat, until it was all cooked through.

And then I served it up with soft tortillas, tomato, carrot, lettuce, cheese and coriander. I held my breath, because I wasn’t sure if the family would notice, and if they’d turn their nose up.

THEY DIDN’T NOTICE. It tastes just like mince. I smirked and gave myself an invisible high five.

Mince was a safe and easy starting point for my family. Quorn has a whole range of products which you can check out here.

Do you regularly make meat-free meals? Would you give Quorn a whirl?

  1. I use the mince quorn in chili, spag bol and anything like that it works really well. I too have just reduced meat really just eating chicken now.
