This is the letter to which your name will be affixed:
Dear UMW board and program advisory group members,
We the undersigned UMW members and supporters reach out to you to express our desire for UMW to fill a prophetic role in the landscape of The United Methodist Church.
Since 1869 UMW has been a leader for justice in the Methodist church. Our organization once defied the church in refusing to recognize the racially segregated Central Jurisdiction. It fought for women's full laity and clergy rights when the church told them this was incompatible with Christian teaching.
Now the church is telling another group of people that they are incompatible.
The 2019 Special Session of the General Conference was a pivotal moment in the history of The United Methodist Church. The passing of the Traditional Plan was a turning away from the Christian values of compassion, justice, welcome, and inclusion--values that UMW has long upheld and advocated for.
We believe that to be true to our UMW tradition and heritage, it is important that our organization both publicly affirm and work for full LGBTQ+ inclusion and oppose the Traditional Plan. As Mordecai reminded Esther, we cannot afford to keep silent at such a time as this (Esther 4:14).
It is our hope that this prophetic and faithful action will be discussed at the next UMW board meeting. This is a moment in which we need decisive Christ-centered leadership.
The Spirit's grace and strength be with you as you meet and lead.
In Grace,
