Dane Cruikshank Drafted by Tennessee Titans

TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona defensive back Dane Cruikshank was selected by the Tennessee Titans in the fifth round of the 2018 National Football League Draft. Cruikshank, a two-year starter and senior team captain for the Wildcats, was the 152nd overall pick in this year's draft, which concluded Saturday.

Cruikshank, a native of Chino Hills, Calif.,  tested well at the NFL Combine earlier this spring after completing his Arizona career with 135 total tackles, including 7.0 for loss and 1.5 sacks. The 6-foot-1, 209-pounder intercepted five passes and combined for 17 passes defended with the Wildcats.

A versatile defensive back, Cruikshank transferred to Arizona in 2015 after playing two seasons at Citrus College where he was a top 100 junior college prospect. Following a redshirt season in Tucson, Cruikshank went on to start all 25 games of his career with the Wildcats, including 12 at boundary corner in 2016 before shifting to the "spur" safety position for 13 starts in 2017.

As a junior cornerback, Cruikshank totaled 60 tackles, including 53 solo stops and 1.5 tackles for loss. He tied for the team lead with a pair of interceptions, while ranking second on the squad with seven pass breakups.

The productivity increased for Cruikshank as a senior safety when he was able to display his ability defending both the run and pass. He registered 75 tackles in 2017, including 5.5 for loss, 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble. In coverage, Cruikshank intercepted three passes and broke up five others.

Cruikshank's presence in pass coverage often emerged against the best competition as each of his five career interceptions came against Pac-12 foes. In 2017, Cruikshank intercepted pass attempts from first round draft picks Josh Rosen (UCLA) and Sam Darnold (USC), in addition to Justin Herbert (Oregon). A year earlier, Cruikshank's picks came against Jake Browning (Washington) and Keller Chryst (Stanford).

With Cruikshank's selection, Arizona football has 180 all-time NFL Draft picks dating to 1939. The Wildcats have had a player drafted in 63 of the 83 all-time drafts, including 33 of the 39 drafts since 1980.

First-year head coach Kevin Sumlin, who spent the past six seasons at Texas A&M, saw two of his former players drafted in the first five rounds, including second-round Arizona Cardinals pick Christian Kirk. The former Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year in 2014, Kirk prepped at Scottsdale's Saguaro High School before starring as a receiver and returner for the Aggies.

Kirk, along with safety Armani Watts, increase Sumlin's tally to 20 draft picks over his six-year career at Texas A&M. Of those 20 selections, an impressive seven went in the first round, highlighted by defensive end Myles Garrett, who was the No. 1 overall pick in 2017.
