This could very well be the booziest opening of the Soo Locks to date.

A group of friends in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan have organized the first ever ‘Freighter Crawl’, where the public is invited to take a tour of some of Sault Michigan’s finest drinking establishments on Saturday, March 24 leading up to the official opening of the Soo Locks at midnight.

“It’s basically the New Year’s Eve of the new shipping season and we should be recognizing that because not only is it affecting our local economy, but it affects worldwide,” said organizer Elizabeth LeBlanc. “We have ships that come through here from all over the world sometimes.”

The Freighter Crawl begins at the Antlers Restaurant at 9:00 p.m., and will make stops at the following establishments:

  • Bird’s Eye Outfitters
  • Three One Three on Ashmun
  • The Wicked Sister
  • The Merch
  • Downtowner
  • Alpha Bar
  • 1668 Winery and Lockside Brewery
  • The Palace Mexican Restaurant and Saloon
  • The Satisfied Frog
  • Soo Brewing Company
  • Moloney’s Alley
  • Captain’s Pub & Grill

The crowd of revelers will then walk or - in some cases, one would assume - stagger to the Soo Locks Visitor Center in order to welcome the first freighter entering the locks at midnight.

“Yeah, there was quite a few [bars] listed,” LeBlanc chuckled.

Organizers hope to make the Freighter Crawl an annual event, and say they’re willing to entertain any and all suggestions that would make the pub crawl grow in the future.

Maybe even some help from their neighbours on the other side of the river.

“It would be great to get the twin Saults involved in something so awesome and make this an annual event,” LeBlanc said.

But for now, the group is looking to acquire the services of a bus that could transport people from bar to bar for this weekend’s event.

You know, just in case things get a little messy.

“We could, that’s why we’re hoping for a bus,” LeBlanc said.
