Noida School Girls’ Brilliant Idea Brings E-Waste Recycling Solutions to Your Doorstep!

Electronic goods, like mobile phones, laptops and even batteries, are daily necessities; it’s almost impossible to imagine life without them. However, disposing of them is admittedly quite a task.
This could be because people don’t know that e-waste needs special handling, or are unaware of e-waste recyclers. It could also be the lack of infrastructure, awareness, and policies, but whatever the reason, the fact is that India is lagging behind when it comes to recycling its electronic waste.
And the repercussions can be quite severe. According to a report by Business World, India is one of the top 5 countries when it comes to generating e-waste—it is projected to generate 52.2 million tons of it by 2021 which is an average of 6.8 kg of e-waste per individual—and only 5% of this waste is recycled.
However, thanks to a team of five school girls from Noida, this is all set to change.
Aditi Jain, Sneha Agarwal, Shraddha Chugh, Shriya Shukla and Kritika Sharma, are all students from classes 9 to 12 in the Vishwa Bharati Public School in Noida and are members of Team Cantavits. They have developed an award-winning Android application which will instantly connect those who want to dispose of their e-waste and recyclers who can take care of it.
After intensive research that went on for about eight months, the team created “EEDO,” a one-click solution to recycling electronic waste.

Atal Innovation Mission, NITI Aayog & The Better India present Innovation Marathon 2018 — a nation-wide challenge open to those under the age of 18 with innovations that can solve some of India’s most pressing issues. The top 30 innovations will win a chance to attend a Student Innovator Program other than getting cash prizes, mentorship and opportunities to develop their prototypes further.

Speaking to The Better India, Shriya said,
“This waste is usually discarded with the regular dry waste, and waste-pickers, in an attempt to earn some extra cash, try to recycle it without adequate knowledge.They may burn these electronics, or take out its metal, exposing themselves to harmful chemicals. There is also the risk of an explosion. It is upon us to take care of our electronics even when they stop being of use to us. So, we developed an app that can help you do so, through one click.”
The process is simple. You download the app, and whenever you need to recycle your waste, you put an advertisement on it. Here, authorised recyclers who have collaborated with the EEDO team will “accept your request”, and you can set up a time and place where the recyclers come to collect it.
The best part is that you don’t have to pay a penny!
The app is still in the development stage and is set to be active on the App store very soon. The team hopes that it will help them spread awareness among common people.
“Our marketing team, coders, PR team were all in place when we developed EEDO,” said Shraddha, another team member, to TBI, adding that “Our USP is the door-to-door step service we offer. Several websites and apps facilitate e-waste management. However, we have collaborated with authorised recyclers who can come to your doorstep to collect the waste. Our app also pays for the electronics, depending upon how well maintained they are.”
Earlier this year, the team won the first prize at the Technovation World Challenge held in California. This annual competition invites girls from all over the world to “solve real-life problems through technology.” The participants are between the ages of 10 to 18 years and work in teams of one to five.

This year, over 19,000 girls guided by over 5000 mentors from 115 countries participated in the challenge, and Team Cantavits from Noida, mentored by Archana Jain, Prajwal Shetty and Bhavesh Rawal won the gold medal, walking away with a cash prize of $15,000!
